Those interested in architectural heritage and cultural history will find a clear focus for their visit in Ichera. The area of Ichera is part of the territory of Sinite Kamani Nature Park. This brings the landscape and the history of the village together at the heart of your travel planning.
Architecture and Cultural Heritage
Wooden houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period define Ichera, and some are well preserved. Nearby mountain villages are also considered rich in architectural monuments from this period. When planning your visit, you can focus on individual houses or take a broader interest in the architectural monuments of the mountain villages.
A total of 84 designated immovable cultural properties are recorded for Ichera, including two of national significance. Access arrangements may vary from one site to another. Before visiting, find out about the conditions at each individual site.
Zora and the Collections
The Zora community center dates back to the 19th century. In 2019, the collection “Ichera – Past, Present, Future” opened there. If you would like to visit the collection specifically, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.
In 2019, a museum collection included objects, literature, and exhibits relating to the founding of a church in 1844. Here too, it is advisable to check before your trip whether the collection can currently be visited. The two collections complement the architectural theme with local history and traditional cultural objects.
Fortress and Historic Routes
The fortress of Manastira/Sikera/Ichera, associated with 12th- to 14th-century ceramics, is located in the vicinity of Ichera. It is also identified with the Fortress of Ichera mentioned in a poem by Manuel Philes. This historical association offers another way to explore the history of the area.
The fortress is also associated with a mountain road from Kozya Pass, locally called Posta Yol. A historic route around the fortress is described as leading toward Irechen Pass. If you plan to follow historic routes, ask locally in advance about the current route and its condition.
