The Underground Mining Museum in Pernik is located in two preserved galleries of the so-called “Old Mines,” dating from 1891. Together, the galleries are about 630 metres long. They belong to the town’s first underground mine; the museum is unique on the Balkan Peninsula. Here, more than a century of coal mining is presented, from manual extraction to mechanised coal-mining complexes. In this way, a specific place and a long history of underground work come together.

The museum is open for visits every day. It accommodates groups of 3 to 20 people; visits take place on the hour. Check the arrangements for visits before you arrive.

Fortress and Early History

The medieval Pernik Fortress stands on a rocky plateau in the southwest of Pernik. Archaeological finds show that a fortress already stood there in the 6th to 5th century BC. The site thus reaches far back beyond the medieval period. A later historical chapter is associated with Krakra: at the beginning of the 11th century, he ruled the fortress and the settlement of Pernik.

This span of time makes the fortress a fitting counterpart to the Mining Museum. The museum focuses on the development of coal mining over more than a century, while the documented beginnings of the fortress date back to antiquity. Those interested in Pernik’s history can thus discover two distinct chapters without merging them into a single period.

Cave, Spring and Hiking Trails

Duhlata Cave has underground galleries with a total length of up to 18 kilometres across seven main levels. Six underground rivers and streams flow through the cave system. These figures convey the cave’s scale and structure; they mark a clear contrast with the more compact galleries described at the Mining Museum.

The Živata Voda spring is located near Bosnek. Abundant water flows from the nostrils of a crocodile’s head carved into the rock—an unusual natural phenomenon that can also be recognised by the shape of the spring. From here, hiking trails continue to Bosnek, Kladnitsa and Chuypetlovo. The spring therefore links a striking natural feature with several named hiking destinations.

The Selimitsa Hut is another starting point for hikes: from there, a marked trail leads to Cherni Vrah and to the Ostritsa and Rudnicher huts. Check local conditions before setting out. The trails from Živata Voda and the marked trail from Selimitsa are different starting points; the destinations named give an idea of the hiking options the municipality also offers.

Sanctuary, Monastery and Church

In the Tsrkva district, the Thracian sanctuary dates from the 2nd to 4th century. It has been conserved and partially restored. Finds include marble votive tablets and statuettes of the Thracian Horseman and healing deities. These finds are kept at the Pernik Historical Museum. The site and the museum pieces offer two different perspectives on the sanctuary: its preserved structure and the objects associated with it.

The Monastery of St Nicholas lies east of Kladnitsa. Its monastery church features frescoes by Konstantin Gerov. In Studena, meanwhile, the Church of St George dates from the 14th to 16th century. The two churches offer a glimpse of different aspects of the religious heritage: frescoes by a named artist in one, and a church dated to a span of several centuries in the other.

Rudartsi: Practical Information

Rudartsi has two outdoor swimming pools with mineral water at 29°C. Before planning a visit, check whether the pools are currently open. The village also has a spa centre with mineral water; find out in advance what facilities are available there. Regular bus services to Pernik and Sofia are listed for Rudartsi. Check the latest timetables before travelling.

Pernik therefore offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: mining and archaeology, caves and springs, hiking trails and religious buildings. Choose the theme that interests you most, and check the practical details about visits, trails and transport before making your plans.
