Liulin brings together local history, folklore and a distinctive connection to the mountains: the Church of St. Archangel Michael stands near the village’s oldest church, which collapsed after a landslide. The archaeological site of Railovsko Gradishte is in the Lyulin Mountains. Those looking for a holiday apartment can plan their stay according to whether they are more interested in churches and local heritage or the mountain landscape.

St. Archangel Michael and local history

Construction of the new Church of St. Archangel Michael began in 2001. Residents supported the project with voluntary work and donations; the church was consecrated on June 4, 2016. The span from the start of construction to the consecration gives the village a recent church history, also tied to the residents’ commitment.

Liulin’s oldest church once stood nearby. It collapsed in the 1970s following an active landslide. This places two very different building histories side by side in the story of the village: a loss caused by the shifting landscape and the church built later.

Folklore and remembrance

Liulin’s cultural history is also reflected in specific celebrations. The fourth national folklore festival, “Liulin Sings and Dances,” was scheduled to take place in front of the community center on June 20 and 21, 2026. In January 2018, a local Surva celebration was ritually opened in the square in front of the Hristo Botev Community Center. These details refer to specific events and differ in form: a festival of song and dance and a ritual opening of the Surva celebration.

The war memorial in Liulin commemorates residents of Railovo and Tsarnel who died in the Balkan Wars, the Inter-Allied War, and the First and Second World Wars. Thus, alongside churches and folklore, memorial sites are also part of the village’s history.

Railovsko Gradishte and the mountains

Routes to the Lyulin Mountains also pass through Liulin. Railovsko Gradishte lies on the highest peak in the western part of the range. The archaeological site covers 42 decares; its features include ramparts, ditches, walls and rubble. When visibility is good, views from there extend towards the fields of Sofia and Pernik. Vegetation and weather affect what can be seen.

A route description published in 2023 estimates the distance from Liulin to Kryvi Kamak at about 2.3 km each way. This is an approximate route distance; as trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Local history or mountain perspective?

The topics address different questions: churches and memorial sites offer insight into local history, folklore points to specific occasions, and Railovsko Gradishte combines archaeological features with a mountain setting. By contrast, the route to Kryvi Kamak offers a distance estimate above all. When planning a trip, you can weigh up whether cultural history or a scenic route through the landscape should take priority.
