Tran reveals itself through striking landscapes and very specific cultural themes: a waterfall with a rock tunnel carved out by water, paths through gorges, visible traces in a rock chapel and the history of yogurt. There are also different route profiles for cyclists. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you mainly want to discover nature, visit cultural sites or combine both.
Gorges and waterfall
A notice from the Ministry of Environment dated March 27, 2026, lists Vrabcha Waterfall as a natural landmark. It is located in the area of the village of Vrabcha in Tran Municipality and is four meters high. Alongside the waterfall, water has carved out a 20-meter-deep rock tunnel. A small path beside the road to Vrabcha runs along the Vrabchanska River and reaches the waterfall after about a 15-minute walk.
The Yablanitsa Gorge is also designated as a natural landmark in a notice from the Ministry of Environment dated March 27, 2026. The designated area includes the town of Tran and the village of Bankya. The gorge itself lies between Vrabcha, Transka Bankya and Tran and was formed by the Yablanitsa River. An ecological trail runs through karst-erosion landforms and nature rich in species; its starting point is in the village of Transka Bankya. This makes the gorge an appealing focus in its own right if you want to explore the landscape and trails.
Trails in the Erma Gorge
You can experience a different gorge landscape along the Erma River. The ecological trail there passes through the man-made tunnel in Zhilav Kamak rock and leads to a viewing platform at Tsarkvishteto rock. You can also observe diverse flora and fauna, including numerous endemic species, in the gorge. A landscaped park by the river offers a place to rest. The tunnel passage, viewpoint and opportunities for nature watching each offer a distinct experience.
Cultural sites with stories to tell
The rock chapel of Sveta Petka is designated as an archaeological cultural monument. The footprints and handprints of the saint, along with a petrified loaf of bread, are still visible there. In summer, the chapel is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In winter, visits on these days of the week are possible by telephone appointment made the day before; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Since opening information may change, check the details before your visit.
At the Yogurt Museum in Studen Izvor, you can learn more about the life and work of Dr. Stamen Grigorov, discoverer of the bacterium Lactobacillus bulgaricus, which forms the basis of yogurt culture. The exhibition traces the history of yogurt from home fermentation to modern technologies. The Historical Museum in Tran focuses on different subjects and is divided into historical and art history departments.
The church of Erul Monastery also brings together different periods: its architecture is characteristic of the 11th to 14th centuries, while it houses valuable old icons from the 17th and 18th centuries. In Nasalevtsi, the Nasalevtsi Oak, more than six centuries old, stands beside the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. For those interested in culture, Tran offers points of interest ranging from museum exhibits to churches and an ancient tree.
Cycling routes by length and profile
Mountain bikers can ride a nine-kilometer route in the Zhdreloto and Bogoina areas. The start and finish are at the information center; the difficulty ranges from easy to moderate. Since trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting off. Another option is Route 102 of the VeloErul circuit: it is 27 kilometers long, takes about four hours, passes through the village of Erul and is described as moderate in difficulty, with mixed terrain and blue markings. The two route profiles can therefore be compared by length and difficulty; VeloErul also has an approximate duration listed.
