Breznik brings together several distinct themes: trails and barbecue areas in Bărdoto Forest Park, leisure activities in the village of Konska, and Survakari festivals in 16 villages in the municipality. This gives your trip a range of possible focuses, from nature and outdoor activities to local festival traditions.

Nature and leisure in Breznik

Bărdoto Forest Park has tourist trails and barbecue areas. If you would like to plan your stay around these facilities, you can make walking trails and a place to barbecue your own points of interest. Municipal visitor facilities may change over time; check their current condition before your visit.

The village of Konska has a leisure centre with its own sport-fishing pond, a go-kart track, bumper cars, and archery. The options range from fishing at the pond to driving and target activities. Consider which of these activities is most important to you, and check before your visit which ones are currently operating. This keeps the leisure facilities in Konska distinct from the trails and barbecue areas in Bărdoto Forest Park.

Survakari festivals and the regional calendar

Survakari festivals are held in 16 villages in Breznik Municipality. For a broader perspective on Pernik Province, the Surova folk festival in the Pernik region is also of interest: it is held every year on January 13 and 14 and celebrates the New Year according to the old calendar. In 2015, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Breznik Municipality and the Pernik region therefore offer two different ways to explore local festival traditions.

Culture and nature in Pernik Province

The Zemen Monastery in Pernik Province is uninhabited by monks and has been converted into a museum. Its church has medieval frescoes; according to the cited research, it dates back to the 11th century. The “Sveti Yoan Bogoslov” Monastery is considered one of the most valuable medieval monuments. The medieval Krakra Fortress is also located in the city of Pernik, on a relatively small rocky plateau in the southwestern part of the city. It can be reached via a paved access road open to vehicles or by a flight of steps. As access conditions may change, check them locally.

The natural attractions of Pernik Province also offer a range of different highlights. Duhlata Cave near Bosnek, in Pernik Municipality, is 17,600 metres long and 53 metres deep. Skakavitsa Waterfall is located in the Zemen Gorge and is 100 metres high. More than 300 rare plant species have been recorded in Ostritsa Reserve. These facts describe different aspects of nature: a cave, a waterfall, and the plant life of a reserve.

Another regional attraction is the Underground Mining Museum in Pernik. Located in old mine workings stretching 630 metres, it presents about 30 exhibits on the development of mining in Bulgaria. It thus complements the historical and natural attractions of the province with an insight into the country’s mining history.
