The Dobrich Centre for Nature and Animal Protection stands out: it is Bulgaria’s first licensed zoo and covers 162 decares. It also offers the “Green School” educational programme.

Plateau, River Valley and Park

Dobrich Municipality is located in Dobrich Province on the Dobrudzha Plateau, within the Danubian Plain. The Dobrich area is also part of the Danubian Plain; the valley of the Suha Reka River runs through the city.

In St. George Park, separate cycle paths and footpaths run around a water-lily lake. The renovated rose garden features 39 varieties of roses, while a skatepark and zip line add to the park’s facilities. Temporary exhibitions are held in the park museum. Concerts, literary readings and children’s festivals take place nearby in spring and summer. If you plan to attend one of these events, check the exact dates in advance.

Dobrudzha is also the subject of an exhibition: “The Nature of Dobrudzha” presents the region’s biodiversity mainly through dioramas.

Crafts, Literature and Art

Old Dobrich showcases, preserves and develops traditional Dobrudzha crafts dating from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The site also recalls the economic, everyday and architectural history of the former Dobrich.

A memorial house was added to the Yordan Yovkov Museum House in 1980. It houses Bulgaria’s only permanent museum exhibition of its kind dedicated to Yordan Yovkov, as well as the largest collection of materials about the writer. The memorial house also hosts temporary exhibitions, creative workshops, concerts, theatrical performances, educational games and reconstructions.

The two historic sites have different focuses: the memorial house is dedicated to a writer, while Old Dobrich explores crafts and the economic, everyday and architectural history of the former Dobrich.

The Dobrich Art Gallery displays works by Vladimir Dimitrov–Maystora, Konstantin Shtarkelov, Dechko Uzunov and other artists. It has a rich permanent collection and an extensive exhibition calendar. The Dobrich Concert Hall, also known among locals as the “Organ Hall”, was built in 1975 and is an important venue for music in Dobrich and Dobrudzha. The Dobrich Military Cemetery has a different historical significance: it is Bulgaria’s largest preserved military cemetery from the First World War.
