A stay in Kavarna can combine coastal landscapes, nature watching and cultural history. The municipality has a 42-kilometre coastline; its beaches cover a total of 74,000 square metres.

Coast and Nature in Kavarna

Bolata is the only sandy beach in the Kaliakra area. A steep path there leads north to the top of the cliff, offering expansive views across the gorge. The beach and viewpoint thus represent two different aspects of the same place.

At Yaylata, archaeological and natural features come together. The cave settlement comprises 101 dwellings, which were already inhabited in the 5th millennium BC. Yaylata is also home to an early Byzantine fortress and five ancient necropolises. The wildlife includes more than 270 recorded species. In addition, more than 178 bird species breed there or migrate towards the African coast to spend the winter.

At Taukliman, birdlife is particularly associated with spring: flocks of thousands of gulls, geese, waders, plovers and other birds stop there to rest. Taukliman is connected to the Via Pontica migration route. Different seasons therefore shape the nature-related highlights: Yaylata is noted for breeding birds and migration towards wintering grounds, while spring stopovers are the focus at Taukliman. Taukliman is also home to the caves Goliamata Maara, Temnata Dupka, the Aragonite Cave and Iglenoto Uho.

Cultural History and Attractions

The Ethnographic Complex of Kavarna comprises a house museum, a restored shoemaker’s workshop, a lace workshop and a courtyard. It presents characteristic cultural features of the Dobrudzhans, Gagauz and Kotlentsi. The crafts and culture of these communities together form the cultural focus here. The history of the buildings can also be placed in context: the Church of St George was built in 1836, and the Church of the Assumption in 1860.

The cave museum at Cape Kaliakra displays archaeological finds from excavations in the reserve, as well as a model of the ancient fortress. During the active tourist season, guided tours or explanations by a guide are offered there. At Cape Chirakman, there is a restored fortress wall of interest to tourists. These sites add further historical themes to the cave settlement, fortress and necropolises of Yaylata.

Festivals and Special Interests

The traditional Mussel and Fish Festival is held annually by the Municipality of Kavarna; in 2026, it took place for the 23rd time. The festival in August 2026 featured public cooking demonstrations and tastings of mussels, Black Sea fish and other seafood. If a festival is an important reason for your trip, check the announced dates and programme before planning. The Kavarna Rock Fest began in 2006, adding a distinct musical milestone to the town’s event history.

Near Kamen Bryag, there are challenging, hard-to-access climbing routes used by sport climbers. This is a particular aspect to consider when planning a trip, alongside the beach, nature and cultural history.
