Discover Dobrich through its architectural history, art collections and the craft traditions of Dobrudzha. The city also offers memorial sites, a historic park and a distinctive perspective on the region’s nature. Visitors who want to shape their trip around a particular theme will find a range of options, from Bulgarian history and literature to painting, paper art and animal welfare.
History, Remembrance and Literature
The Ethnographic House in Dobrich was built in 1860 and is one of the best-preserved architectural monuments from the Bulgarian National Revival period. Its exhibition includes clothing, textiles and household objects that convey Bulgarian culture and the regional character of Dobrudzha. The house thus combines a tangible example of architecture with objects from everyday life.
The Dobrich Military Cemetery was also established in 1916, during the Battle of Dobrich. The site contains about 3,500 burials and represents six national armies, ten nationalities and six faiths. The Military Cemetery Museum complex is designated an immovable cultural asset of national significance. Here, history is conveyed not only through a single event, but also through the diversity of the people remembered at the site.
The Yordan Yovkov Memorial House focuses on literary history. It houses Bulgaria’s only permanent museum exhibition on the writer’s life and creative work, as well as the largest collection dedicated to him. This makes the memorial site distinctly different from exhibitions on regional everyday life and architectural history.
Art and Crafts of Dobrudzha
The Dobrich Art Gallery is housed in a neoclassical cultural monument under heritage protection. Its nine halls feature permanent collections of painting, sculpture and graphics. It also has a paper art collection considered unique in Bulgaria. The focus is therefore on various visual arts, while the Ethnographic House concentrates mainly on everyday objects and clothing.
The open-air museum “Old Dobrich” presents and preserves traditional Dobrudzha crafts from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Its training museum offers educational programs for school pupils, young people, students, and Bulgarian and foreign tourists. Crafts and educational activities thus complement collections with a stronger focus on art or literary history.
The “Old Dobrich” complex also offers traditional Bulgarian dishes at a guesthouse, restaurant, tavern and café. Individual establishments may change. This adds a culinary dimension to a visit focused on craft traditions. Whether your interests lie more in art, literature, history or regional crafts, each of these themes gives your trip its own focus.
Park and Nature Themes
Dobrich City Park St. George was also established in 1860 and is designated a monument of park art. The park and the Ethnographic House therefore share the same year of origin, although they represent different aspects of cultural heritage. Bicycle routes are marked in the park; check their condition before planning to use them.
The Dobrich Center for Nature and Animal Protection is Bulgaria’s first licensed zoo. The “Nature of Dobrudzha” exhibition complements these nature-related attractions with panoramic scenes showing typical flora and fauna and the biodiversity of Dobrudzha. The range of interests covered therefore extends from historic sites and collections to animal and nature conservation.
