The Thracian sanctuary with rock niches near Krasen is considered the only known site of its kind in Dobruja so far. A road leads to the site. The village of Krasen is also home to the Church of St Nicholas: built in 1860, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Dobruja. After a fire, it was restored and reopened in 1896; its bells, made in Kyiv, were donated by the Russian Church. The rock sanctuary and the church offer two different ways to explore the history of this place.

The municipality of General Toshevo is in Bulgaria’s Dobrich Province and comprises 42 villages. Its settlements lie 40 to 70 kilometres from the Black Sea. The landscape is flat, and the climate is temperate continental. Those planning a trip around specific discoveries will find both cultural and historical sites and opportunities to explore and spend time by the water.

Exploring the Drian Reservoir

From the turn-off to the Drian Reservoir, an asphalt road runs for about 3.5 kilometres and is suitable for a regular passenger car. There is also a marked route several kilometres long to the reservoir, intended for walking and cycling. The road and the longer route thus offer different options for getting there and continuing on foot or by bike.

The facilities at the reservoir include picnic areas, birdwatching hides, lakeside pavilions and barbecue areas. The surrounding area is also suitable for excursions, fishing and hunting tourism. Bird enthusiasts can make the hides a distinct part of their visit; those who prefer to linger by the water will also find pavilions and picnic areas. The annual Enyovden gathering at the Drian Reservoir features local folklore, traditional cuisine and the use of herbs in folk medicine. Dates may vary.

Museum and archaeological traces

The General Toshevo Historical Museum focuses on archaeology, ethnography, and modern and contemporary history through its specialised departments. It presents its collections at three exhibition venues: in General Toshevo, Dabovik and Krasen. The exhibitions are therefore spread across several locations rather than concentrated in a single venue. For organised group visits on public holidays and weekends, a request must be submitted three days in advance; check this requirement again before travelling.

An archaeological exhibition in the municipality featured more than 100 finds from field surveys and excavations, including finds from Izvorovo, Velikovo, Sredina, Spasovo, Kardam, Yovkovo, Ograzhden and Preselentsi. The places of origin illustrate the range of locations represented among the finds. For those interested in cultural history, this overview of archaeological finds complements the history of the church in Krasen and the museum’s departments.

Local cuisine and landscape

Traditional dishes associated with the municipality include Riazana Chorba, Trahana and white Dobrudzha beans with pork brisket and liver. These dishes add a culinary dimension to visits to the reservoir and cultural and historical discoveries. In Zhiten, the Neovyrshaniyat Harman Memorial Garden is a prominent monument with green spaces and park-like grounds.

A municipal development document from 2018 lists five Natura 2000 protected areas in the municipality. Check the protected-area designations in the current register. This places the older information in its proper timeframe, while the flat landscape and temperate continental climate round out the general picture of the municipality.

Another look at Dobrich Province

Those who look beyond General Toshevo to the wider destination of Dobrich Province will find a different cultural and historical focus in Balchik. The Ethnographic Museum of Balchik presents the rural and urban culture of the Balchik region from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Its collection includes more than 1,500 exhibits on local livelihoods, everyday life, festivals and customs. This broader perspective complements the local focus without conflating the exhibition venues in General Toshevo, Dabovik and Krasen with the museum in Balchik.
