The Via Pontica, one of Europe’s largest bird migration routes, runs above the Poda Protected Area. Every year, tens of thousands of white storks, Dalmatian pelicans, birds of prey and songbirds pass through. Poda lies within the city of Burgas, which is situated at the westernmost point of Burgas Bay. Three lakes surround the city: Atanasovsko, Burgas Lake (Vaya) and Mandrensko. The bay and lake landscape thus provide different geographical reference points for exploring Burgas.

Bird Migration and the Poda Nature Centre

The Poda Nature Conservation Centre is open year-round and features a permanent exhibition on the biodiversity of the area and region. Binoculars and spotting scopes are available, as are themed talks led by ornithologists. Observation terraces on two levels and interactive outdoor modules complement the exhibition. This offers several ways to engage with nature: you can explore the region’s diversity, attend a talk or make use of the centre’s observation facilities.

Bird migration and the centre offer different points of focus. The Via Pontica highlights the seasonal movement of many groups of birds through Poda, while the centre brings together exhibitions, talks and wildlife observation. Before your visit, check the current opening hours and offerings, as operational details may change.

City History at the Brakalov House

Burgas’s Ethnographic Museum is housed in the Brakalov House, built in 1873. The house is considered the only surviving Bulgarian urban house of the Balkan House type from the 19th century in Burgas. The museum explores the traditional culture and everyday life of old Burgas. The building and exhibition thus offer two different historical perspectives: the date of construction places the house in the 19th century, while the museum’s themes turn the focus to culture and daily life.

The main railway station is also part of the city’s architectural history: it was declared a cultural monument in the 1970s. Those interested in Burgas’s architectural heritage can consider it alongside the Brakalov House as another historic building in the city, though the two places do not share the same history.

Railway Station and Bus Connections

Burgas’s main railway station is next to the South bus station. Bus routes from there serve all destinations along Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast, as well as Varna and Burgas Airport. These connections are a helpful guide when planning onward travel; no timetables or departure times are specified. If you plan to travel by bus, check the service for your travel date.

The Beach and Activities by the Water

Burgas Central Beach stretches along an almost two-kilometre-long golden-sand coast. Swimming and sunbathing are the activities described there. There are also spaces for volleyball, football and beach tennis. This offers a contrast between relaxing beach time and sporting activity, with each lending a different focus to your visit.

Seasonal offerings and conditions may vary; the sports areas may also be maintained seasonally. If you are planning a particular activity, check that it is currently available before your visit. The length of the coastline and the three sports mentioned also give you specific points of reference for balancing time at the beach with exercise.

A Look at the Burgas Aviation Museum

At the Burgas Aviation Museum, visitors can use virtual reality headsets to take on the role of a pilot and fly an aircraft of their choice. This is a different way to experience Burgas from observing nature in Poda, exploring the city’s history or spending time at the beach. The VR equipment’s availability may change; check in advance if this experience is important to your plans.
