Sarafovo’s beach stretches along a sandy section about 1.5 kilometres long, with shallow water. There are also traces of an older history and various ways to get around on foot, by bike and by bus. If you are planning a stay, you can combine time at the beach with local history or include the municipal cycle route in your plans. The right accommodation depends on which of these aspects is most important for your trip.

Beach and Seafront Promenade

The sand on Sarafovo’s beach is fine; iron and magnetite are associated with the colour of the darker sections. The seabed is shallow and slopes gently. Breakwaters help protect the bay from strong currents and large waves. You can also watch planes flying very low near Burgas Airport from here.

A seafront promenade connects Sarafovo with the Burgas Sea Garden. It is intended for pedestrians and cyclists, offering another way to travel between the two places besides the municipal cycle route. The mooring areas at the fishing harbour have electricity and water points.

Archaeological Traces and Local History

Sarafovo’s ancient and medieval harbour and town fortress date from the 4th to 6th centuries. Remains of a Roman settlement lie about two kilometres north of Sarafovo; part of the settlement is underwater. The founding of the present-day town belongs to a much more recent period: Sarafovo was founded in 1920 by refugees from Eastern Thrace.

The archaeological sites and the town’s founding story thus offer different perspectives on Sarafovo’s history. For travel planning, they are distinct historical points of interest: the harbour and fortress in the town, and the settlement remains to the north. The distance given for the Roman remains is approximate; it does not indicate walking time.

Nature and Routes at Lake Atanasovsko

Lake Atanasovsko has the protected-area designation “Maintained Reserve” and is also a Ramsar wetland. It is a shallow, hypersaline lagoon with an average depth of 30 centimetres. A total of 333 bird species have been recorded in the area. There are two designated trails for visitors: a short one and a long one. This gives you a choice of routes, although their descriptions do not specify a particular distance in kilometres.

A municipal Green Corridors cycling route is 20.2 kilometres long. It connects Burgas and Lake Atanasovsko with Sarafovo’s archaeological harbour and fortress, as well as the Thracian tomb of Camp Europa. The route alternates between cycle paths, paved sections and unpaved sections. It therefore links nature and history, while its length and surface are practical details to consider when planning.
