Primorsko Between Coast and Nature

The town of Primorsko lies on a small peninsula between Stamopolu Bay and Devil’s Bay. The size of the beaches also shows how much space the coastal landscape occupies within the municipality: the municipality’s beaches cover a total of 1,045,000 m², of which 523,000 m² are protected dunes and beaches. The second figure is part of the total area, not additional beach area. The peninsula’s location and the area figures represent different scales: the geographical reference is to the town, while the beach statistics refer to the municipality.

Arkutino, also called Bear Marsh, is a marsh and reserve in Primorsko Municipality, known for its unspoiled nature and rare plants such as the sea daffodil. The Ropotamo Reserve is located near the destination. It includes the mouth of the Ropotamo River, Arkutino Marsh, rare Longos forests, and various coastal rock formations. Nature lovers can experience these places from different perspectives: Arkutino is known for its marsh and rare plants, while Ropotamo brings together a river mouth, forests and coastal rock formations.

Municipal signs point to eco-trails leading to Begliktash, the rock formation “Lavskata glava,” and the Ropotamo River. Check the condition of the signs on site. Organized tourist boat trips on the river are permitted in the Ropotamo Reserve; check local operating conditions before travelling.

Archaeology and Everyday Culture

At the Primorsko Historical Museum, two themes showcase different kinds of evidence. The ethnographic collection presents the lives of Black Sea Strandzha residents in the last century through traditional costumes, household objects and vessels. These exhibits represent everyday culture; the museum also displays archaeological finds from the municipality’s land and waters.

Examples include a tombstone from the Chenger area, the Thracian sanctuary of Begliktash, dolmens, and the Urdoviza fortress wall in Kiten. Begliktash lies 5 km north of Primorsko at the foot of the Strandzha Mountains and is considered a Thracian megalithic sanctuary; the site is also described as an ancient observatory.

The restored fortress walls of Urdoviza are located where Kiten stands today. Urdoviza was an important Bulgarian fortress and a major naval base. In the center of Kiten is the permanent exhibition “Secrets from the Sea Floor.” It features finds from a submerged prehistoric settlement, a sunken ship and anchors, as well as artifacts from archaeological excavations of the Urdoviza fortress wall. Thus, maritime finds and the history of the fortress sit side by side in Kiten.

In Yasna Polyana, the exhibition “Balgarskata Yasna polyana” was created with support from Primorsko Municipality and the mayor’s office of Yasna Polyana and opened in 1998. It focuses on Tolstoy’s Russian estate and a Tolstoyan colony that existed in Alan Kayryak from 1906 to 1908.

Novo Panicharevo also offers different points of interest in cultural history. The Church of “Sv. Troitsa” was built in 1881 and contains exceptionally rare icons. A museum opened in 2014 in Strati Dimitrov’s authentic house in the center of the village. The focus here is on the church’s icons and the museum in Strati Dimitrov’s house.
