Vrančići’s local history brings together remembrance, burial traditions, and connections to the landscape. Its historical themes range from Stećci and Nišani to the prehistoric place name Igrišća; Borak adds a specific area of meadow and woodland. Travellers can choose between cultural and historical themes and a connection to the landscape.

Remembrance and Dates

The Vrančići Memorial Cemetery commemorates Midhat Drina and Ejub Drina. Both were killed during the attack on Vrančići on 21 June 1992. Remembrance is thus tied to an event with a precise date.

During the traditional Dan šehida celebrations, a šehidsko mezarje and a memorial site were visited in Vrančići in 2025 and 2026. If you would like to connect your trip with this occasion, check the relevant date in advance: the visits took place during celebrations in those two years.

Stećci and Burial Traditions

The Vrančići–Grivići Stećak necropolis contains 15 Stećci. The largest stone measures 250 × 147 × 65 centimetres and weighs more than five tonnes. On its upper surface is a cross ornament with circular ends; a small cross is carved into one of the circles at the southeast end. The measurements convey its scale, while the ornament draws attention to a specific detail of its design.

The present-day Vrančićko greblje contains a tomb made of upright stone slabs, covered by a single slab that is now broken into three pieces. The tomb is thought to be a late medieval burial structure of a type found in cemeteries with Stećci. Its dating remains a probable interpretation.

Several old Nišani in Vrančićko greblje document the continuity of burial traditions from the age of the Stećci to the Nišani. Together with the tomb, which is thought to be late medieval, they provide a nuanced view of local burial traditions.

Place Name and Landscape

The prehistoric place name Igrišća, in the newer settlement of Vrančići, refers to a place for games, social gatherings, and meetings of the village community of that time. Unlike the necropolises, the name points to communal activities and thus to another aspect of local history.

The Borak landscape area lies about 300 metres southwest of Vrančići, in the direction of Mount Ormanj. It covers around 15 dunams of meadow and woodland. The approximate distance and compass direction indicate its location; the area figure conveys its scale. Borak therefore offers a distinct connection to the landscape alongside the village’s cultural and historical themes.

For a broader historical perspective, it is worth distinguishing between the present-day area and a possible former unit: in the area of present-day Grivići, there are three necropolises with 97 Stećci. Grivići, Drozgometva, and Vrančići probably formed a territorial unit called Drozgometva in the Middle Ages. This hypothesis refers to the medieval period, not to a present-day administrative boundary.
