Vrelo Bosne, Velika Aleja and Butmir reveal three different sides of Ilidža: a spring landscape, a landscaped avenue and prehistoric heritage. Added to these are Roman history, a protected cultural monument and the Ilidža Thermal Riviera with indoor and outdoor pools. This offers a range of options for planning your visit—nature, exercise, history or water.

Springs, Paths and Avenues

Vrelo Bosne is the source area of the Bosna River. Six springs and numerous watercourses converge there to form a watercourse called Mala Bosna. The Vrela Bosne area has facilities for spending time in nature and a children's playground.

Landscaped walking paths in Vrelo Bosne provide access to lakes where swans live; Velika Aleja is suitable for walking, jogging and cycling. The choice, then, is between a path to the lakes and choosing your own way to exercise along the avenue.

Velika and Mala Aleja were laid out in 1893; 3,000 chestnut and plane trees were planted to create this ensemble of avenues. Velika Aleja is 3.5 km long. It is therefore not only a place to exercise, but also part of a historically designed landscape.

Getting to Velika Aleja

The tram runs to the last stop in Ilidža. From there, it is about a ten-minute walk to the start of the 3.5 km-long Velika Aleja. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the access route and the avenue itself: the roughly ten minutes refers to the walk to the beginning, while 3.5 km is the length of the avenue. If you want to include the avenue itself, you can calculate the access route and the rest of the walk separately.

Butmir and Roman Heritage

A Roman settlement developed in Ilidža around healing sulphur springs. The ancient settlement reached its greatest flourishing in the 3rd century; it had already attained the status of a colony by that time.

The Butmir archaeological site lies on the right bank of the Željeznica, not far from the modern settlement of Butmir. The prehistoric settlement of Butmir is designated a National Monument; at the same time, the archaeological site is the oldest and best-known archaeological site in Ilidža. The name refers here to two different places: the archaeological site and the nearby modern settlement.

Rimski Most, the bridge at Plandištu, is a protected cultural monument. Alongside the settlements and archaeological sites, a structure is therefore also central to Ilidža's cultural heritage. The distinction is useful when choosing a historical focus: Butmir represents prehistoric archaeology, while the sulphur springs and colonial status represent the Roman era.

Pools and Programmes

The Ilidža Thermal Riviera offers indoor and outdoor pools, as well as numerous water-based and entertainment programmes. This adds another leisure option to the walking paths and historical sites for visitors to consider when planning their stay.
