Gothic architecture, historic craftsmanship and trails along the Pram give Taufkirchen an der Pram several distinct focal points. For your itinerary, cultural sites, hikes of varying lengths and a cycling route through several towns are all options. This lets you shape a day around church art, the way people used to live and work, or outdoor activity. Each topic tells a different part of the town’s history, without requiring you to follow one fixed itinerary.
Church art, artists’ history and crafts
The single-nave Gothic parish church was built around 1450 by master builder Stefan Krumenauer. The church houses a valuable Gothic Madonna dating from around 1460. The building and the artwork offer two concrete perspectives on the town: the church’s architecture and a Madonna whose creation dates to roughly the same period.
The Bilger-Breustedt House was the home and workplace of the artist couple Margret Bilger and Hans Joachim Breustedt. This cultural connection complements the church art with the story of two artists and the place where they worked together.
At the Laufenbach Handicrafts Museum, faithfully recreated wooden houses around 300 years old show how people used to live and work in small workshops. The museum covers 3,500 m² and focuses on around 15 crafts and trades that were based in the village of Laufenbach in the 19th and 20th centuries. The recreated houses bring everyday life in the living and working spaces into focus, while the range of crafts broadens the picture of the village’s trades at the time.
The Taufkirchen an der Pram middle school also has a special cultural connection: it is the only school in Austria with its own museum, the Museum in the School. Together with the historic houses and the artist couple, it gives a broad picture of how culture in Taufkirchen is connected with architecture, artistic work, crafts and a museum in a school setting.
On foot: trail length and theme
Two hiking trails start at the town square. The 12 km Marterl and Chapels Trail leads from Taufkirchen an der Pram past several local chapels and wayside shrines to the Museum in the School. It thus connects small religious monuments with a cultural destination. The 4.3 km Pram Trail also starts at the town square and follows the Pram. Comparing the lengths helps you choose how far you’d like to walk: the shorter route focuses on the river, while the longer one also passes chapels, wayside shrines and the museum. The distances indicate the trail lengths.
Cycling and activities at the Generations Park
The Pramtal Cycle Path runs along the Pram through Zell an der Pram, Andorf and Taufkirchen an der Pram to the Baroque town of Schärding. It is signposted as R21 and is suitable for families. Unlike the local hiking trails, this cycling route passes through several named towns and continues beyond Taufkirchen to Schärding.
Högl-Lorenz Generations Park offers numerous play structures and a fitness area for all ages. The park is also home to the district’s first pump track. Play, fitness and pump track activities therefore offer different ways to get active there; the cycle path is a separate route that runs through several towns.
A remarkable trace from the past
The Taufkirchen bog oak consists of the remains of an oak’s crown. The tree was probably felled by a storm between 260 and 420 AD. The dating is uncertain; the combination of preserved crown remains, the great passage of time and the possible cause makes the bog oak an unusual historical landmark in the town.
