Waldkirchen Am Wesen brings landscapes, trails, and cultural attractions together in one travel plan. Choose according to your interests: Would you like to focus on hiking and cycling, enjoy sweeping panoramic views, or explore architecture, boatbuilding, and art? The different themes give your stay different focal points, without requiring a set itinerary.

Sauwald and panoramic views

Waldkirchen Am Wesen lies on the Sauwald plateau, near the steep drop into the Danube Valley. The Vier-Viertel-Blick viewpoint in Atzersdorf opens up a sweeping view across Upper Austria: its 360° panorama stretches across the Innviertel, Mühlviertel, Hausruckviertel, and Traunviertel regions. These four named regions give the panorama a specific regional context. The landscape and views are a distinct highlight alongside the town’s trails and cultural attractions.

Hiking, running, and cycling

Waldkirchen Am Wesen offers around 60 kilometers of opportunities for hiking, running, and Nordic walking. Cyclists can also consider the Danube Cycle Path, which is one of the area’s cycling options. These options offer different ways to spend time outdoors without prescribing a particular route sequence.

One specifically named route is the Danube Resonance Trail. It is just under 13 kilometers long, so you should allow enough time and be reasonably fit. All the exercises take place on the trails or directly alongside them. This distinguishes the length of an individual route from the roughly 60 kilometers of options for hiking, running, and Nordic walking. Which option you choose depends on whether you want to focus on a particular route or on different ways to get active.

Church, castle ruins, and Zille boat

The Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas features a magnificent net-vaulted ceiling. Its architecture offers a specific cultural theme alongside the landscape and outdoor activities. At Wesen Castle Ruins, sections of the walls of a rectangular keep and the palas, as well as remains of the enceinte and zwinger, have been preserved. These described structures give your visit a different focus: here, the historic layout of the complex takes center stage.

The permanent exhibition “The Zille” adds the subject of ship and boat building. It displays wooden boat models and the tools used to make them. The exhibition also explores the role of Zille and wooden shipbuilding in the past and present. The subject thus ranges from models and traditional tools to the trade’s significance across different periods.

Sculpture park and Bräu Chapel

The sculpture park at Atelier Fahrner is freely accessible around the clock. It features metal sculptures by Annemarie and GĂĽnther Fahrner. The sculptures add a distinct artistic highlight alongside the architectural and historical themes of the parish church, castle ruins, and exhibition.

Bräu Chapel is also directly connected to a hiking route: it lies on the Bründlweg Trail No. 89 from Wesenufer to Waldkirchen. The spring by the chapel is equipped with a ladle. If you are looking at the trail’s route, you can consider this location together with the named trail.
