Schärding can be explored from two perspectives: its Baroque-influenced townscape and activities on the Inn. The Silberzeile is at the heart of the town, alongside museums, the castle park and various ways to explore the town and its surroundings. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on local history, a circuit through the floodplain forest or a trip on the Inn.
Baroque Town History and Collections
The Baroque Silberzeile is in the centre of Schärding. In front of it, in the Oberer Stadtplatz, stands the Christopher Fountain, created by Prof. Hans Wimmer from Munich in 1963. The Silberzeile and the fountain offer different ways to take in Schärding’s townscape: the former reflects its Baroque character, while the latter is a work with a renowned creator and a known year of creation. The old town walking tour leads through the Baroque town and offers an additional way to explore historic Schärding.
The museums also have different focuses. The town museum is located in Schärding’s former castle complex. The local history museum displays exhibits from different periods, from the Neolithic Age to the present day. This means you can visit a museum in a former castle complex and an exhibition spanning a broad range of history. The Schlossgalerie, meanwhile, is an exhibition centre designed according to modern criteria. It provides a space for interactions between music, visual art, literature and science. The Schlossgalerie’s programme may change.
The castle park combines historic features with views of the Inn. Its history stretches from the former castle courtyard to its redevelopment as a park from 1895 onwards. This spot thus brings together a specific historical development and views of the river.
Trails with Different Themes
Via Scardinga is a family-friendly discovery trail where families can explore Schärding in the footsteps of the Middle Ages. The Schatzsucherweg Stadt der Schätze (Treasure Hunt Trail: City of Treasures) focuses on Schärding’s hidden treasures. The two trails offer different themes to choose from: Via Scardinga centres on families and medieval traces, while the treasure hunt trail focuses on discovering and searching. This lets you decide which theme best suits your interest in the town.
Floodplain Forest, Inn Cycle Path and Boat Trips
The Au-Runde (Floodplain Forest Loop) runs from Schärding along the river and through the floodplain forest, offering views of the Inn. The Inn Cycle Path leads directly to Schärding. The two options therefore serve different purposes: the Au-Runde explores the floodplain forest and offers views of the Inn, while the Inn Cycle Path provides a direct connection to Schärding. Another option is a boat trip on the Inn. It starts at the Innlände in Schärding and runs between Schärding and Passau. This gives you a choice between routes on land and a trip on the water. If you plan to take a boat trip, check the timetable in advance.
