Enzenkirchen brings together architectural history, collections and hiking opportunities in hilly, forested surroundings. The Local Heritage House covers topics ranging from farmhouse furniture and a former weaving mill to minerals and Bronze Age finds. The trails offer a variety of experiences: they lead through meadows and forests, open up scenic views or explore historical and spiritual themes. This gives visitors several concrete ways to combine culture and time outdoors during their stay.

Parish Church and Local Heritage House

The present-day parish church was built around 1530, after the older “Enzo Church” was demolished. It had been a private church dating back to the 11th century. The gap in time reveals two distinct phases in the town’s history.

The Local Heritage House features farmhouse furniture and books, some of which date back to the 16th century. The exhibits also include the Schwanthaler Room and a former weaving mill. A separate stone museum displays minerals from all geological eras. A sword and jewellery from the Bronze Age are also on display. Everyday objects, crafts, geological collections and archaeological finds are therefore presented side by side; the books and Bronze Age objects mark very different periods.

Hiking trails with varied themes

The “Sagenhaftes Witrauntal” hiking and fitness trail is suitable for walks and exercise. It leads through green meadows, alongside water and through deciduous and coniferous forests. The “Alpenblick” panoramic hiking trail offers views of the nearby hills, with their forests, farmland and floodplains, as well as the Alpine foothills and the mountains of the nearby Salzkammergut. Its focus therefore differs distinctly from that of the Witrauntal trail: here the emphasis is on the views, while the other combines walking and exercise with a variety of landscape features.

Historical and spiritual themes also shape the selection. The “Graf Enzo” Historical Hiking Trail follows a Celtic packhorse trail through the “Denggenhengst.” The “Mystische Neun Kapellen” hiking day focuses on spiritual themes, pagan sacred sites and mythical-religious stories. Another option is the “Bayrische Grenzmarken” hiking and cycling trail. In connection with this trail, the field names Leitental, Zankapfel and Tor are mentioned for the area between the Bavarian Innviertel and the Austrian Hausruckviertel.
