Windischgarsten lies on the edge of Kalkalpen National Park, with the Haller Mauern mountains framing the town to the south. Highlights include two themed trails focusing on geology, a panoramic tower and places that bring local and regional history to life. There are also different formats to choose from when planning your visit: from a short circular trail to a cultural walk lasting about an hour and a family outing taking around two hours.

Geology on two trails

The Geological Nature Trail brings together a wealth of geological history along a manageable route: the approximately 100-metre-long circular trail leads to 10 stations featuring 40 objects from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. In a short distance, you can encounter evidence from three geological periods. The trail is suitable for families, strollers, wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments.

The Millionenweg themed trail offers a different focus. With around 26 stations, it brings to life the diverse landscape of the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen region and its 250-million-year geological history. The route follows the historic Proviantweg. For centuries, provisions and iron were transported over the Hengstpass, so here geological history is complemented by the story of an old transport route. The two trails therefore differ both in scope and perspective: the Geological Nature Trail focuses on individual objects and geological periods, while the Millionenweg focuses on the landscape and the historic use of the route.

Mountain views and trails through the landscape

The National Park Panoramaturm Wurbauerkogel is a 21-metre-high glass tower with more than six floors. From its viewing platform, the 360-degree panoramic view extends across 21 peaks over 2,000 metres high when visibility is good. Clear visibility is an important part of the viewing experience: the panoramic view described is available when conditions allow. Inside the tower, the “Faszination Fels” exhibition presents fascinating facts about the local mountain world and the flora and fauna adapted to it.

If you would rather include a circular hike than a viewpoint in your plans, the Veichltal Circular Hiking Trail offers a clearly described route: it runs from Windischgarsten through the Veichltal valley, around Sonnwendkogel and Giererkogel, and back to Windischgarsten. The description specifies the starting and finishing points in town and names two mountains as landmarks. It does not give a walking time or difficulty level, so the route cannot be compared with the short themed trails on that basis.

Local history and culture

The guided tour of the town, which lasts about an hour, is a cultural walk through the town centre. It provides information about Windischgarsten’s history, sights and economic development. This sets it apart from the themed trails: the focus here is on the town’s development and notable buildings, rather than geology and landscape.

A prominent landmark in the town’s history is St. Jakob Windischgarsten parish church, which was consecrated on 14 August 1562. Its altars and pulpit are particularly worth seeing. The church park also includes the Psalmenweg, a trail that invites visitors to meditate. In this same cultural setting, historical context, church furnishings and a path with a meditative focus complement one another.

The Windischgarsten Local History Museum displays Roman finds unearthed during several excavations connected with the Roman postal station of Gabromagus. Those interested in early history can discover finds from the Roman period here; the town tour, in turn, covers a broader range of subjects, including history, sights and economic development.

Options to suit your schedule

The 3D archery courses at Wurbauerkogel also differ in their features. The Panoramarunde course includes around 25 different 3D animals. The Familienrunde course, by contrast, is described as taking about two hours and having a total of 10 activity stations. These details can help you distinguish between the options based on the time you have and their respective focus, without assuming that the number of stations indicates a walking time or difficulty level.

A stay in Windischgarsten can bring together a variety of interests: geological objects along a short circular trail, a longer series of stations exploring the history of the landscape, views of peaks over 2,000 metres high, trails in the Veichltal valley, and local and cultural history. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these activities you would like to include in your schedule—without making any one type of outing the measure of your entire stay.
