More than 60 km of well-marked hiking trails, a meditation trail around 2 km long in the Feistritztal and the wooden Hoh-Haus observation tower on a historic castle rock give Lasberg a distinctive character. Other attractions include historic smithies, Dornach Castle and the Splash outdoor pool. You can plan your trip around outdoor activities, cultural history or a mix of both.

Hiking, Valley Trail and Bridle Paths

Lasberg’s network of hiking trails comprises more than 60 km of well-marked routes. It leads through gently rolling landscapes, past lush pastures and through shady forests. If you’d like to include a shorter route in your hiking day, consider the meditation trail: Starting at the train stop, it follows the Feistritztal for around 2 km.

The side trips also offer a range of different highlights. The La 8 – Elzer-Weg has a short detour to the Pechölstein in Elz. On the green loop of the Marktkulturwanderweg, a steep, 6 km detour leads to the Buchberg rock. These options therefore include both a short detour and a route of a specified length that is explicitly described as steep. The extensive network of bridle paths also offers opportunities to explore the municipality of Lasberg on horseback.

Buchberg and Dornach

Buchberg is also known locally as Hoh-Haus or Burgberg. A wooden refuge castle is thought to have stood here in the early Middle Ages; the castle moat and earthen rampart are still visible at the entrance to the castle rock. The wooden Hoh-Haus observation tower stands high above the Feistritztal on a historic castle rock on Buchberg.

Dornach Castle ruins were built around 1200 by the Barons of Lasberg and were first mentioned in a document in 1416. They are protected under Austrian monument protection law. Preserved as a castle on a block of rock beside a steeply descending river valley, Dornach features a mighty round tower. Poetry readings are held at Dornach Castle every year.

Smithies, Church and Outdoor Pool

The Alte Marktschmiede operated as a farrier’s and wagon smithy from 1526 to 1953. Advance booking is recommended for group visits. The Fürstenhammer forge was built in 1570 and operated until 1970. At the Fürstenhammer open-air museum, the water-powered hammer is demonstrated to visitors on weekends by prior arrangement.

Lasberg parish church is protected under Austrian monument protection law and is described in the Mühlviertler Gotikstraße travel guide. Its interior has been digitised for a virtual tour. The Children’s Way of the Cross is a meditative Stations of the Cross featuring numerous terracotta reliefs.

The Splash outdoor pool has around 400 m² of water, including a sports pool as well as leisure and children’s pools. Alongside trails and historic sites, the various pools offer another distinct way to spend your free time in Lasberg.

Getting Here and Choosing a Hotel

The ÖBB Lasberg/St. Oswald train stop is 3 km from the town of Lasberg. If you’re planning to arrive by train, check the connections that work for your travel date.

When looking for a hotel in Lasberg, your preferred focus can be a useful starting point: hiking and bridle paths appeal to different interests than Dornach Castle, the smithies or the parish church. The Splash outdoor pool is another leisure option.
