Discover Wullowitz through its distinctive landscapes and history: the L2 Border Trail follows the Maltsch through protected areas, while the Pottery Trail and several cycling routes offer other perspectives. The village also has a historical role as a border crossing point and is home to Tobau, a small moorland forest. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the trails according to their respective features—for example, their landscapes, routes and seasonal conditions.
Border History and Scenery Along the L2
Wullowitz was a border crossing point in the border system established after the creation of Czechoslovakia. The L2 Border Trail follows the Maltsch for about 3 km through the Natura 2000 protected area and the European Green Belt. The landscape along the river is therefore the focus of this trail; the village’s historical role at the border is a separate aspect of its history.
At Eisenhut, the L2 Border Trail joins the Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail. Remains of the horse-drawn railway can be seen there. Alongside the history of the border, visitors interested in cultural history will find another specific point of interest: traces of a historic transport route can be understood in the context of the trail junction at Eisenhut.
Hiking: The Pottery Trail, Tobau and a Rest Stop
The Pottery Trail is a family-friendly themed hiking trail particularly suited to families with children. It passes through the forest near Leitmannsdorf and Stiegersdorf on its way to Wullowitz, then follows the protected Tobau area as far as the B 310. Tobau is a small moorland forest preserved in Wullowitz. This gives the trail a different focus from the L2 Border Trail: the forest, the protected area and the moorland forest are among its explicitly named features.
The western section of the Waldluftbadeweg trail also leads to Wullowitz as part of the border hike; a rest stop is available there. The L2 Border Trail has a different landmark: it crosses the main road about 500 m before the Wullowitz border crossing.
Cycling Routes with Different Itineraries
The Mühlviertel Rennradhügelwelt – Green Belt Tour runs from Rainbach to Wullowitz, then continues a few metres alongside the Austrian-Czech state border to Leopoldschlag. The “Bier & Natur” beer cycling tour also passes through Wullowitz, but then continues along the Maltsch, following the European Green Belt to Leopoldschlag. From Wullowitz, the Green Belt Tour runs a few metres alongside the Austrian-Czech state border, while “Bier & Natur” continues along the Maltsch, following the European Green Belt to Leopoldschlag.
Seasonal Tour and Local Dining
In winter, the Franzosenhof cross-country ski trail offers another option: it is 10 km long and of moderate difficulty. It follows the Maltsch and the Pottery Trail via Leitmannsdorf to the Franzosenhof in Wullowitz, where you can access the trail. The trail’s operation depends on snow conditions, so before planning a winter visit, check whether it is currently open.
The Franzosenhof is located at Wullowitz 1, directly on the MĂĽhlviertel B 310 main road, also known as the E 55, about 500 m before the Wullowitz border crossing. It serves regional Austrian dishes and homemade specialities. You can register at the Franzosenhof for guided hikes through the Tobau moorland area; registration is required. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available.
