Kefermarkt brings together historical cultural attractions and a variety of trails. The start of construction on the church, the Kefermarkt winged altar, the architecture of Weinberg Castle and the subjects covered by the educational trails give you concrete starting points for planning. You can focus on architectural and art history, or include information stations and described routes.
Church and Winged Altar
Construction of the church in Kefermarkt began in 1473. The Kefermarkt winged altar was created later, between 1490 and 1497, by an unknown master. The dates therefore provide two distinct points of reference: the start of construction on the church and the period when the altar was created.
The winged altar is 13.5 metres tall and made of limewood. Its height, material and date of creation provide concrete details to look for when viewing the work. The combination of a precise time span and a known material makes the altar tangible as a cultural attraction, without attributing it to a specific artist. If you are interested in the history of the area, you can consider these details as a separate focus alongside the architectural history of the church.
Weinberg Castle and Weinberg Advent
Weinberg Castle stands prominently on one of the typical ridges of the Mühlviertel region. Its striking architecture includes a massive circular wall, a round bastion and flanking round towers. The castle’s elevated location and fortifications give it a different cultural emphasis from the winged altar: here, the architectural ensemble takes centre stage. Special guided tours of the castle are available for groups. If you plan to join one, it is best to check the current options in advance.
Weinberg Advent is also held at Weinberg Castle, every year on the second weekend in December. This gives you a specific seasonal date to plan around. If Advent is the reason for your trip, check the date for the current year before travelling.
Educational Trails and Routes
The Beer Educational Trail focuses on how beer is made and the ingredients used. Along the route, information stations provide facts about the subject. This educational trail puts learning at the forefront: you can focus on a topic rather than seeing the route simply as a connection between two places.
On the Pendulum Educational Trail, by contrast, the route details provided help with navigation. From Kefermarkt town centre, the approach leads in the direction of Gutau or St. Leonhard. The educational trail begins after crossing the Flanitz over a wooden bridge and is approximately 800 metres long.
The Kefermarkt Circular Route N6 leads via Wagrein down to Kefermarkt. The route descriptions therefore differ clearly: the Pendulum Educational Trail has an approximate length and a crossing over the Flanitz, while the N6 is described as running via Wagrein and descending towards Kefermarkt.
You can organise your stay around your interests: the church and winged altar offer historical points of reference, Weinberg Castle adds an architectural highlight, and the trails offer different themes and described routes. Weinberg Advent rounds out the options with an annual event in December.
