Tragwein offers more than one possible focus for a stay: many hiking, Nordic walking and running trails start in the town centre; nature, water, farming themes and architectural history provide other perspectives. Which of these you combine depends on whether you prefer to be on the move, explore a landscape or look for traditional crafts and historical details.
Trails from the town centre
The town centre of Tragwein is the starting point for many hiking, Nordic walking and running trails of varying difficulty. The options therefore include different forms of exercise, from hiking and Nordic walking to running. If you look into the routes in advance, you can choose trails to suit your preferred activity and level of difficulty.
The hiking trails have been GPS-mapped and can be downloaded to navigation devices or mobile phones. This lets you keep the route guidance on your own device. One specific route is described for the Tragwein East Circular Hiking Trail: it passes the Tragwein swimming lake and then returns to the market square. Check the conditions on this trail before setting out.
The Waldaist and the swimming lake
The Waldaist in Tragwein is part of a European protected area and is a habitat for the rare freshwater pearl mussel. This gives the river a distinct connection to nature that goes beyond using the trails. A free, publicly accessible information centre at the Upper Austrian Castle Museum in Reichenstein is dedicated to the Waldaist and Naarn European protected area and its flora and fauna, which are worthy of protection. It also provides a place to learn more about the protected areas and their plant and animal life.
A special feature of the swimming lake is how its bathing water is treated: the water flows through four smaller pools with gravel and plant filters. It is also enriched with oxygen by means of a waterfall. These steps show how biological filtration and oxygenation work together in this bathing area.
Agriculture and Bauernkrapfen pastries
At Pankrazhofer, two circular trails in and around the organic farm invite you to stroll, enjoy and discover. Their themes are the orchard meadow and agricultural cycles. Those interested in agriculture will find not just a route to walk here, but also topics to focus on along the way.
The Bauernkrapfen pastry workshop in Tragwein offers a different kind of insight: visitors can watch the handmade preparation of Bauernkrapfen pastries and sample freshly baked treats in a variety of flavours. The selection may vary. Both the preparation process and tasting are central to the experience.
A look at architectural history
Tragwein Parish Church also offers a point of interest for visitors interested in culture. The presbytery is attributed to a period of construction in the second half of the 14th century. This period, rather than a single exact year of construction, is therefore the relevant timeframe. This historical perspective complements the nature and agriculture themes with a specific connection to architectural history.
