Pregarten can be explored through several distinct themes: regional contemporary history, Neo-Gothic architecture, religious sites on Kalvarienberg and trails through varied landscapes. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these focal points: the museum offers a broad historical overview, while the routes along the Feldaist or to a viewpoint offer different perspectives. You can tailor your stay to whether cultural history, architecture or landscapes are your main interest.
Regional history at the museum
The Pregarten Museum presents an overview of 3,200 years of regional contemporary history across around 300 m². The exhibition thus covers a broad span of time and gives the region’s history its own cultural focus. If you are interested not only in individual buildings but also in historical developments, the museum offers a different perspective from looking at a single historic building.
One specific chapter is represented by objects from the “1st Upper Austrian Stoneware Factory Prägarten, K.B. Greiner & Co.” The factory was based in what is now the Bruckmühle Cultural Centre from 1905 until production ceased in 1925. In contrast to the museum’s broad historical span, this period is clearly defined; the objects draw attention to a particular chapter in the region’s industrial history. A broad historical overview and a specific historic business thus offer two distinct ways to explore the past.
Church architecture and Kalvarienberg
The Neo-Gothic parish church of Pregarten is a distinct landmark in the town’s architectural history. Cathedral master builder Otto Schirmer constructed the Neo-Gothic building between 1893 and 1897. Its style and construction dates make the church a specific topic alongside the museum’s broad overview.
Another cultural route leads to Kalvarienberg: the P2 Kalvarienberg circular trail takes you to a chapel and a Holy Sepulchre. These offer two different kinds of cultural experience: a church building with a known construction date, and religious sites at the destination of a circular trail.
Trails along the Feldaist and scenic views
The P6 Lower Feldaist Valley trail follows the Feldaist through a protected landscape area. It passes steep rock formations, glacial potholes and a climbing garden. The river, protected landscape and the formations mentioned shape the themes along this route. P6 thus offers a different perspective from the town’s architectural history and historical highlights.
The P5 Fernsicht trail offers another perspective. From the Hubertus Chapel on the outskirts of Pregartsdorf, the view extends across much of the lower MĂĽhlviertel as far as the Alps. P6 and P5 have different focal points: P6 follows the Feldaist and passes landscape features, while P5 centres on the view from a specific location. You can choose between the trails according to their character.
The BruckmĂĽhle Water Experience Park in Pregarten is a family-friendly local recreation area in the Feldaist Valley.
