For over 750 years, Bruck Castle has stood high above Lienz. Built by the Counts of Gorizia, the castle is a prominent landmark in the city’s history and also a venue for exhibitions and concerts. As you explore Lienz, you’ll encounter a building that brings together a long history and cultural events.
Castle, town hall and early city history
Liebburg Castle also tells a story of changing uses: the Counts of Wolkenstein had it built as a residence between 1605 and 1608. Since 1988, it has served as Lienz’s town hall. Its construction and later function offer two different perspectives on the same building across time.
The Isel Tower is part of the partly preserved city wall. The medieval fortification at the tower dates from 1311 and was built as part of an expansion of the city of Lienz. The history of the religious building on the site of St. Andrä Parish Church goes back even further: a religious building already stood there in the 5th century. A cultural-history walk featuring 56 destinations, described in the Lienz cultural guide, adds further stops to these individual sites. This brings not only castles and fortifications into view, but also the city’s early religious history.
Trails and nature experiences
The Iseltrail connects Lienz with the glacier gate at Umbalkees in Hohe Tauern National Park. The first stage can be reached from Lienz main station by train or bus, followed by a short walk. If you plan to use this connection, check transport options before setting off. The trail runs from Lienz to the glacier gate; for planning the first stage, however, the access from the station is the specific point of reference.
Another geographic point of reference is the Aguntum Museum: it lies along the Drau Cycle Path, but outside the city limits of Lienz. This distinction helps separate the city itself from a destination along the cycle path. The cycle path is the described connection to the museum; no travel time or distance is specified.
Galitzenklamm gorge is located where the Galitzenbach stream flows into the Drau. One of the activities on offer is the “Water Experience Trail”; the gorge also has several via ferrata routes, whose availability should be checked on site. Tristacher See offers a different experience: it is considered the only natural bathing lake in East Tyrol. The surrounding area therefore offers a range of nature experiences—a gorge with named activities and a lake that stands out for its regional distinction.
The trails described also differ in their specific features. The family hiking trail in Family Park has 15 adventure play stations along the way. The “Märchensteig,” by contrast, passes partly through dense forest on its way to Hochsteinhütte at an elevation of 2,023 metres. One trail description specifies the stations along the route; the other describes the forest section, the destination and its elevation. When planning your outings, these details offer different points of reference without specifying a particular walking time or difficulty level.
A market in Messinggasse
The “Stadtmarkt Lienz” fresh produce market is part of the local weekly routine. It takes place every Friday and Saturday in the historic artisan street of Messinggasse. The market thus offers a regular opportunity to visit a specific location in Lienz. As the timing may be important for a visit, it’s a good idea to check the market schedule in advance. Alongside the historic buildings and nature and hiking destinations, it adds a glimpse of the city’s market life to your explorations.
