Bruck Castle has towered above the city of Lienz for more than 750 years. It was built by the Counts of Gorizia. The museum collection includes more than 20,000 objects and archival materials. This means that two distinct cultural themes take centre stage during a stay: the castle’s long history and the breadth of its collection.

The city’s history at specific sites

The city’s history can also be explored through different developments at other buildings. The Franciscan monastery in Lienz was originally founded as a Carmelite monastery. The newly completed Liebburg was destroyed; when it was rebuilt, it was given the towers that are now characteristic of the cityscape. A church already stood in the 5th century in the immediate vicinity of the parish church of Lienz-St. Andrä.

Choose trails by starting point, destination and distance

The Albin Egger-Lienz Trail is 3.9 km long and leads from St Anthony’s Church in Lienz’s main square to Bruck Castle. The Russenweg runs for 8.2 km from the Hochstein cable car in Lienz to the Hochsteinhütte mountain hut. The Dolomitenblick themed trail starts and ends at the same place: the 8.5 km route begins and ends at the Zettersfeld valley station. In terms of distance, the Albin Egger-Lienz Trail is the shortest of the three; the Russenweg and Dolomitenblick are similar in length. Their destinations also differ: Bruck Castle, the Hochsteinhütte or a return to the valley station.

Cycling routes and getting to the Iseltrail

The Lienzer Talboden cycling route No. 35 starts in Lienz, is consistently marked with uniform signage, has only gentle climbs and crosses the main road via underpasses. The Drau cycle path offers a different route: it passes through Lienz and continues along the Drau river landscape to the border of Carinthia.

There is specific travel advice for the first stage of the Iseltrail: it can be reached by train or bus from Lienz main station, and from there it is only a few minutes’ walk to the starting point. When planning, you can therefore choose between cycling routes with described route features and information on getting to the start of a trail stage.

Hochstein activities and seasonal planning

The Osttirodler runs for 2.7 km from the Moosalm across Lienz Castle Hill to the finish area of the Hochstein Arena. The Hochstein climbing park offers 18 different courses, with jumps of up to 20 m high. At the climbing park’s Kidspark, children as young as two can take part together with their parents. The details describe different features: the Osttirodler’s route and endpoints, and the climbing park’s number of courses and maximum jump height. Check the climbing park’s seasonal opening times before your trip.

The city market and seasonal highlights

The Lienz city market offers a wide variety of local products year-round, with seasonal highlights. Its year-round offer goes hand in hand with changing seasonal accents, so the market can also be considered when planning trips at different times of year.

It is also worth checking route details before setting off: information about the Albin Egger-Lienz Trail and Dolomitenblick may be updated seasonally.
