Virgen combines a hedgerow landscape shaped over centuries with hiking trails, winter activities and cultural history. When planning your trip, you can choose from several focuses: multi-stage hiking, historic churches and a castle, water features along the Path of the Senses, or seasonal winter sports.
Landscape, Water and Trails
The Virger Feldfluren are a hedgerow landscape created over centuries by local farming practices. The landscape is therefore also shaped by agricultural use. The Path of the Senses offers a different focus: it includes a water playground with Kneipp basins, watercourses, channels and sluices. Here, the focus is on specific water features, while the fields tell a story of a long history of cultivation.
The Virgentaler Sonnseitenweg leads leisurely hikers from Matrei in Osttirol to Prägraten am Großvenediger in two to four stages. The Rabenstein ruins are directly along the trail. From the Obermauern bus stop, you can reach the Iselschlucht suspension bridge via Trail No. 46 in about 30 minutes. This gives you different hiking options: a multi-stage route with a historic stop along the way, or an approach with a named starting point and approximate walking time.
Winter Activities in Virgen
Fellachlift, a small ski area particularly suitable for beginners and families, is located right in the village. It is a winter-season offering. In addition, Virgen’s network of cross-country ski trails is part of the Dolomiti Nordic Ski network. The lift and cross-country skiing provide different options for a winter stay, without requiring the same sporting interests.
Castle and Churches: Local History
Rabenstein Castle was probably built in the 12th century and served as the seat of a Pfleger—a local administrator and judge—of the Virgen court. Prägraten and St. Jakob in Defereggen were also part of this court. The ruins connect this historical setting with the Virgentaler Sonnseitenweg, which passes directly by them.
Today’s Virgen parish church is Gothic and was consecrated in 1516. The pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee stands in Obermauern. Originally a Romanesque place of worship, it was extended and remodelled into a Late Gothic building; the work was completed in 1454. Its frescoes also tell a story of their own: Simon von Taisten painted scenes from the Passion of Jesus in the late 15th century. The dates therefore refer to different things: the completion of the remodelling and the later creation of the frescoes.
Local Traditions and Stone Carving
The Virgentaler Opferwidder tradition dates back to a vow made in 1635. During the Opferwidder procession, the pilgrimage leads from Virgen parish church to the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church in Obermauern. Dates may vary from year to year, so if you would like to include the procession in your trip, check the date for your planned stay.
Another cultural highlight is the stone-carving workshop in a former sawmill on the banks of the Isel. You can often watch the artists at work there, though their activity may vary. The workshop adds an insight into artistic craftsmanship to the historic buildings, without being the same kind of attraction as the church and castle histories.
When to Visit and How to Find a Hotel
When looking for hotels in Virgen, the time of year is a good first consideration: Fellachlift is a winter offering, dates for the Opferwidder procession may vary, and whether you can watch at the stone-carving workshop depends on what the artists are doing. Depending on whether you prioritise cultural history, hiking or winter sports, this will give your stay a different focus.
