Thurn combines hiking and themed trails with protected cultural sites. For your trip planning, you can therefore choose different focuses: trails through the countryside, mountain tours, or the history of the church, mill, and farmhouse.

Hiking and Nature Themes

Thurn offers numerous hiking and themed trails for exploring the area around the Lienz valley basin. One hike leads from Thurn to the Neualpl Lakes. Other hiking trails extend as far as the Schober Group in Hohe Tauern National Park. The peaks of the Schober Group are also within the municipality of Thurn. Seasonal conditions and access may vary for mountain tours; take this into account when planning your hiking day.

In the northeastern part of the municipality, Thurn includes part of the Zettersfeld plateau, a winter sports and hiking area. The toll road takes you to starting points for tours in the Zettersfeld hiking area in just a few minutes. Road conditions and possible restrictions may vary; check them before setting out. This means you can include trails from Thurn and the drive to tour starting points at Zettersfeld as separate options in your plans.

The Peace Trail is also accessible by bus to the “Thurn Rottmann” stop. Bus services may change, so check the current timetable before travelling. The Birdwatching Trail focuses on nature: a total of 35 birds are introduced at six stations. They are found in forests, fields and open countryside, or in residential areas. The themed trail therefore features birds from a range of habitats and offers a specific point of interest for visitors who are particularly interested in birdlife while hiking.

Cultural Monuments and Local History

The Tyrolean Register of Monuments dated 23 June 2026 lists the Catholic branch church of St. Nicholas, the Zauchen Mill, and the Kammerlander Hof farmhouse. All three are protected as historical monuments under an ordinance. The Kammerlander Hof is also designated as a museum and gallery. The church, mill, and farmhouse offer different examples of historic buildings in Thurn.

St. Nicholas Church in Thurn has been a place of pilgrimage to Fátima since 1943. This adds a pilgrimage history to its significance as a protected historic building. Times for worship may vary; if you would like to coordinate your visit with a service, check the latest information.

The Gothic winged altar from Thurn Church dates from 1496 and is now housed in the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum. This distinction is important when planning a cultural visit: the altar is part of the history of Thurn Church, but its present location is the State Museum. Along with the protected buildings, local history thus offers several specific points of interest that differ thematically from the hiking trails.
