The terraced natural and cultural landscape in Oberlienz is shaped by fieldstone walls, which are particularly characteristic of the village’s appearance. Historic buildings, hiking trails and the Isel River pools complete the setting. When planning your visit, you can choose different focuses: Oberlienz offers insights into traditional building and working methods as well as trails through meadows and along the Isel.

Landscape and Trails

The sunny trails lead through colorful flower meadows and along varied paths, and are suitable for walks and hikes. A gentle hike to Helenenkirche in Oberlienz offers a different experience: it leads beneath Tyrol’s highest linden tree to a viewpoint overlooking the mountain formations of the Lienz Dolomites. The options described therefore differ in their focus: one highlights meadows and paths, while the other features a named destination with a view.

The Peace Trail leads to the Helenenkirchlein chapel, with ten stations along the way. The stations invite visitors to pause and reflect, giving the route a contemplative character. Another option is Stage 4 of the Walter Mair Circular Hiking Trail in the Lienz Valley Floor: it passes through the Oberlienz and Oberdrum area and ends at the Isel. The Kneipp hiking trail ends in Oberlienz/Lesendorf; check the route conditions before your trip.

The Isel River pools are another natural attraction: they lie along the glacial Isel River and are characterized by their wild, unspoiled nature. This gives you a choice of different themes for your activities—trails through flower meadows, a hike with views of the Lienz Dolomites, or landscapes along the river.

Open-Air Museum and Historic Buildings

The Oberlienz Open-Air Museum is a collection of historic buildings along the Schleinitzbach stream in the village center. Its buildings offer insights into life and building methods in past centuries. The grain mill belonging to the “Znopp” hereditary farm is part of the collection: grain was milled there and processed into animal feed using a clover crusher.

Other historic workspaces and storage facilities bring different aspects of everyday life in the past to life. Flax was roasted and broken in the bathing and flax-breaking room until the early 1950s. The wool carding machine was powered by a waterwheel and processed washed wool until it was ready for spinning. In the grain storehouse, people once stored fruit, potatoes, field and garden produce, as well as barrels of sauerkraut.

Churches and other buildings also help orient visitors to Oberlienz’s built heritage. As of May 28, 2024, the Tyrolean register of historic monuments lists the Catholic filial church of St. Helen in Oberdrum, Oberlienz; the Catholic parish church of “Our Lady of the Assumption” in Oberlienz; and the Haigl-Kasten granary in Oberlienz as protected monuments.

Oberlienz in the Regional Context

In the broader regional context, Oberlienz, together with Gaimberg and Thurn, is one of the three “sun villages” around the Lienz Valley Floor. These villages offer views of the mountains of the Lienz Dolomites. The Iseltal Cycle Route is another useful reference point when planning further outings in the region: it runs between Lienz and Matrei in East Tyrol, is about 29 kilometers long, has an average gradient of one percent, and follows a largely asphalted route. Check the route conditions before setting out.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

If you’re looking for a hotel in Oberlienz, you can tailor your search to the kind of stay you have in mind. For a focus on local history and culture, explore the open-air museum, its historic buildings and traditional working methods. If you’d rather spend most of your time outdoors, you can consider the sunny trails, the hike to Helenenkirche or the Isel River pools as different themes for your trip. This helps you decide what matters most to you without turning the different trails into one single itinerary.
