In Kaunertal, you can choose between different highlights when planning your stay: the Glacier Road leads deep into the upper valley, while the Adventure Loop starts and ends in the village centre of Feichten and passes through a gorge to viewing platforms. The Quellalpin adds topics related to climate and glaciers. This gives you the option of deciding whether you would like to make a road route, a specific walking loop or a themed attraction the focus of your stay.
The Glacier Road and the Postbus
The Kaunertal Glacier Road is 26 kilometres long, has 29 hairpin bends and climbs 1,500 metres in altitude. It leads deep into the upper Kaunertal valley. These three figures complement one another: the length, number of bends and elevation gain show different aspects of the route. This lets you consider the road as an activity in its own right and take its length, winding course and elevation into account when planning your trip.
Austria’s highest Postbus stop is located on the Glacier Road at an altitude of 2,750 metres. It is served year-round. If the Postbus is important to your plans, check the current timetable before travelling.
Climate, glaciers and the Quellalpin
The Quellalpin Kaunertal is home to the permanent exhibition “With All Our Might. Climate, Glaciers, Kaunertal.” It explores climate and glaciers, with a focus on the Gepatschferner glacier. This gives the broad subject a specific focus. For travellers who do not base their choices solely on roads or trails, the exhibition offers a distinct thematic highlight.
The Quellalpin also has an indoor swimming pool and a rooftop sauna area with views of the surrounding mountains. The mountain views are a feature of the rooftop sauna area; the indoor swimming pool is also part of the Quellalpin. The exhibition and facilities therefore appeal to different interests: climate and glaciers on the one hand, and the swimming pool and sauna on the other.
The Adventure Loop from Feichten
The Kaunertal Adventure Loop starts and ends at the Quellalpin in the village centre of Feichten. From there, it passes through the Verpeil Gorge to the Adlerblick and Bergwerksblick viewing platforms; the return route follows the Knappensteig trail down to the valley floor at Feichten. Since the start and finish are at the same place, the route can be considered a loop. The named sections also provide a specific sequence from the starting point through the gorge and platforms to the return route.
You can experience the Verpeil Gorge via trails, stairs and a suspension bridge. Local access conditions may vary seasonally, so check the conditions for your visit date before setting out. The difference between the two types of outing is clear: the Glacier Road is described in terms of its length and elevation profile, while the Adventure Loop is defined by its shared start and finish, the gorge and the viewing platforms.
Kaunertal in the Kaunergrat Nature Park
Kaunertal lies in the heart of the Kaunergrat Nature Park. Within the nature park, the Ötztal Alps quiet zone covers an area of about 96.20 km² in the Pitztal and Kaunertal area. This figure refers to the quiet zone in the specified area, not to Kaunertal alone. These are different scales for geographical context: the valley’s location in the nature park and the larger regional area of the quiet zone.
