When choosing a holiday apartment in Sankt Jakob am Arlberg, two different focal points can shape your stay: the Baroque parish church and hikes with specific time and distance details. The history of the village can be considered separately from planning your hikes. This means you don’t have to fit every topic into a fixed daily schedule: you can focus on church and art history or use the time you have available for hiking as your starting point.
Baroque Church and Historical Context
The Church of St. Jakob is dedicated to the Apostle James the Elder and is the oldest church in the municipality. The present-day Baroque church was built in 1773 and consecrated on 22 July 1778. Construction and consecration are distinct historical milestones: the year 1773 marks the construction, and 22 July 1778 the consecration. The church interior is adorned with elaborate Baroque vault frescoes. Another art-historical detail is the pulpit, which depicts a falling Satan by Johann Schnegg.
The parish church underwent a major renovation in 2007 and 2008. In the Tyrolean list of the Federal Monuments Authority dated 28 May 2024, the Catholic Parish Church of St. James the Elder is listed as protected by decree. The cemetery of St. Jakob at St. Jakober DorfstraĂźe 93, 6580 St. Anton am Arlberg (St. Jakob am Arlberg), is also protected by decree.
The dedication places the church in its religious context, while its status as the oldest church describes its significance within the municipality. Its construction history and furnishings thus offer different perspectives on the same place of worship.
Choose Mountain Trails by Time and Distance
The mountain hike to Putzenalpe is listed as 10.8 kilometres and approximately four hours, with a moderate difficulty level. On the return, it follows trail 28B to St. Jakob. The distance, approximate duration, difficulty and return route give you a clear picture of the hike and help you decide whether you want to set aside a larger part of your available hiking time for it.
The Bergwerk Gand circular hiking trail takes approximately 1.5 hours and branches off after about 300 m from the Way of St. James, trail no. 14. Compared with the approximately four hours for the Putzenalpe hike, this is the shorter time commitment. You can first choose based on the hiking time available and then take account of the route details given for each option.
The Way of St. James also connects the church perspective with a specific route recommendation: on the section from Pettneu in Tyrol to Klösterle am Arlberg in the Klostertal valley, a detour to the Church of St. Jakob is recommended. Trail conditions can vary by season, so take the season into account when planning.
