Kappl combines insights into Alpine pasture life with a range of trails through the mountains. The Alpe Dias Alpine Pasture Museum explores the development of Alpine farming in the Paznaun Valley; on the winter routes, trail lengths and walking times provide practical guidance. There are also chapels with remarkable features and an adventure park at the Diasbahn mountain station. When choosing accommodation in Kappl, you can plan your stay around culture, summer activities, or winter trails.

Alpine Farming and Chapels

The Alpe Dias Alpine Pasture Museum showcases Alpine pasture life in the Paznaun Valley at original locations and traces its development over recent decades and centuries. It also explains how milk is processed and refined into butter and cheese; homemade cheese rounds off the visit. The museum is open seasonally, so check its opening hours before your visit.

Several chapels feature art-historical details from different periods. Kerker Chapel contains three wooden figures by sculptor Johann Ladner, dating from 1760. On the way to Dias, Ruhestein Chapel features a 110-centimetre-high crucifix. The chapel in Bild has a brightly painted early Baroque altar dating from around 1680. Wiese Chapel contains an 18th-century altar decorated with angels and depicting the Apostles Peter and Paul, as well as a large, artistically valuable and well-restored carved figure of the Virgin Mary. Rotweg Chapel is located in a forest.

The cultural landscape includes around 90 traditional settlements with a village character, where old customs are kept alive. Alongside individual architectural and artistic works, these settlements and their traditions represent different aspects of local culture.

Winter Trails with Different Stages

The Dias snowshoe hike starts and ends at the Diasbahn mountain station. It is 1.8 kilometres long and takes one hour. The Sesslad winter hiking trail also starts at the mountain station, but ends at the Untere Sessladalpe; the 4.66-kilometre route takes around 1.5 hours. The two tours therefore differ in length and duration, as well as in their endpoints: the Dias loop returns to its starting point, while the Sesslad route ends at the alpine pasture.

For a longer stage, take the “Weisse Weiten” winter long-distance hiking trail: its first stage covers 15.9 kilometres from See, via the hamlet of Oberhaus, to the Kappl ski area. The Escape Trail Kappl has different dimensions: it is 2.6 kilometres long, with 166 metres of ascent and 100 metres of descent.

Mountain Station, Hiking Scenery and Cycling

The Diasbahn takes you up to an elevation of 1,830 metres. At its mountain station, Sunny Mountain Adventure Park offers disc golf, a low ropes course and a petting zoo. The park covers 80,000 square metres at an elevation of over 1,800 metres. The hiking scenery is described as featuring rushing streams, flower-filled meadows and far-reaching views.

Kappl has a network of e-bike routes along alpine pasture tracks, panoramic trails and valley routes; availability may be seasonal. A flow trail runs 3.7 kilometres from the Diasbahn mountain station to the historic Egger Chapel. Check the latest trail status before riding. Guided winter and snowshoe hikes with experienced local guides are available; snowshoes can be rented locally.

As a seasonal option for getting to trails and excursions, the summer bus runs every half hour to places where you can explore the area on foot. Check the timetable and eligibility for use before travelling. The Alpine Pasture Museum is also open seasonally; the adventure park and Diasbahn operate seasonally. Check their respective operating times when planning your visit.
