Galtür lies between the Silvretta and Verwall mountain ranges. Marked hiking trails, culture at the Alpinarium and seasonal activities at Silvapark offer a range of options for your stay. You can plan your trip around a themed hike, a longer route, local history, or winter sports and climbing.
Hiking: Themed Trails and Stages
The marked hiking trail network in Galtür covers 250 kilometres and ranges from easy panoramic trails to alpine summit tours. One themed trail in the municipality focuses on the historic and present-day extraction and use of water and takes about an hour and a half. The Path of Reflection leads from Zeinis to the forest chapel and takes approximately two hours. By comparison, the stated duration of the water-themed trail is about half an hour shorter.
The Paznaun High Trail offers a different kind of route: it is around 130 kilometres long and leads through the entire Paznaun Valley to Galtür in nine stages. This means you can choose between individual trails with a specific approximate duration and a multi-stage route. Conditions on individual hiking trails vary by season.
The Alpinarium and Local History
The Alpinarium Galtür is an interactive museum as well as an information and documentation centre. It has a dedicated memorial room and changing exhibitions on the dynamics of the mountain world, including Alpine folding, climate and avalanches. The permanent exhibition “Cheese to Marienberg” includes a section with a film about the Zinsweg. The “Kugelkoordinaten” room is entirely mirrored and accompanied by a three-part sound journey. The parish and pilgrimage church of Maria Geburt also offers insight into different periods of local history. The first church was built in 1359; the church houses the Gothic votive image “Mary, Queen of the Poor.” After it was destroyed during the Engadine invasion in 1622, the parish church was rebuilt by 1624. From 1777 to 1779, it was extended, given a new vaulted ceiling and renovated in the late Baroque style. This makes it possible to place the early history of the church, its reconstruction and a later redesign in their historical context.
Winter Sports and Climbing at Silvapark
The Silvapark Galtür winter sports area is located at an altitude of 2,295 metres, is divided into six sectors and includes 43 kilometres of ski runs, as well as ten cable cars and lifts. Activities include downhill skiing and race snowboarding, freestyle parks, cross-country ski trails and ski touring routes. Operations are seasonal; before travelling, check which activities are available on your dates.
The Silvapark Galtür bouldering area is also located at the foot of the Ballunspitze, at an altitude of around 1,800 metres. It comprises 14 sectors and more than 445 routes. The Silvapark via ferrata starts at the mountain station of the Alpkogelbahn in Galtür and leads to the 2,671-metre summit of the Ballunspitze. Access and conditions for these climbing activities vary by season; check the current situation before setting out.
Getting There and Event Dates
Bus route 260 connects Landeck-Zams railway station with Galtür via the Paznaun Valley every half hour. As service frequency depends on the timetable, check the schedule for your travel date before setting out.
