Schönberg in the Stubai Valley is located where the Stubai Valley meets the Wipptal. For planning your visit, the village combines a distinctive townscape and several points of cultural and historical interest with a designated cycle route and a themed trail. The focus ranges from the townscape and its history to a day spent cycling or walking.
Townscape and location
The municipality’s settled area extends from Unterberg at 800 m to Gleins at 1,400 m. Decorated farmhouses shape the townscape. Schönberg is a clustered village; its settlement center is surrounded on three sides by the Brenner motorway, which runs across the Europabrücke. The Europabrücke crosses high above the Wipptal and is 192 m high.
The location and townscape offer several points of reference: the elevation figures refer to the municipality’s settled area, while the clustered village layout and farmhouses characterize the village itself. The motorway and the Europabrücke are another prominent part of Schönberg’s geographical description.
Culture and history
The Holy Sepulchre in Schönberg was first erected in 1770 and is one of the most significant surviving works of art of its kind in Tyrol. The installation includes around 100 iridescent, colored tomb globes illuminated from behind, as well as candles. During Holy Week, many visitors make a pilgrimage to Schönberg Parish Church to see the Holy Sepulchre. Catholic Masses, parish services and Liturgy of the Word services are held there. As schedules may change, check the parish’s current notices before your visit.
The Wittingwarte was built in Schönberg in 1890 as a wooden lookout tower. It is a listed monument and was restored in 1994/95. During the Battle of Bergisel, Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer set up his headquarters in Schönberg several times. The Schöberlhof was once a post station and features facade paintings.
These historical connections have different points of focus: the Holy Sepulchre represents religious art; the Wittingwarte and Schöberlhof, architectural history and former functions; and Andreas Hofer, the history of the events surrounding the Battle of Bergisel. Local history can thus be explored through individual buildings as well as Schönberg’s role in a historical event.
Cycling and hiking
Stubai Cycle Route 19 was officially opened in October 2025 and starts in Schönberg. The route is signposted as far as Doadler Alm in Falbeson. It connects Schönberg with Neustift, Fulpmes, Telfes and Mieders. Its average gradient is five percent; it is suitable for e-bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes and balance bikes.
Another option is a family-friendly themed trail from Schönberg via Gleinser Weg to Alpengasthaus Gleinserhof. The 2025 Stubai hiking guide gives an approximate walking time of 1.5 hours and an elevation gain of 335 meters. These details provide specific guidance for this trail without equating its walking time with the cycle route’s gradient.
The two options can be compared using their different planning details: the themed trail has an approximate walking time and elevation gain, while Route 19 has an average gradient and lists suitable bike types. This can help you plan your day according to whether you would rather go hiking or cycling.
Getting there and planning your visit
The Schönberg i.St. Dorfmitte stop is served by bus routes 590–594 on the Innsbruck–Schönberg–Stubai Valley connection. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting off. This will help you take the named stop and group of routes into account for your specific travel date.
For a trip focused on cultural history, the Holy Sepulchre, Wittingwarte and Schöberlhof offer different themes. If you would rather plan around a specific activity, you can use the signposted route of Route 19 or the walking time and elevation gain for the themed trail. In Schönberg, local history, cycling and hiking come together in clearly described options for planning your day.
