Absam is shaped by the nature and landscape of Halltal. Most of the area lies within Karwendel Nature Park. There are also cultural attractions, ranging from the Matschgerer tradition to historical exhibits. When planning your visit, you can choose between experiences in nature and insights into the history of the village.

Nature and trails in Halltal

The historic brine trail runs past rugged, sheer limestone walls, diverse vegetation and emerald-green streams. At the end of the trail, you can look into one of the eight main tunnels. The route description links striking landscape features with a specific destination. Another option is the Runstboden loop in Absam: It passes the ski jump set in the forest at the entrance to Halltal and continues to Runstboden, with its beautiful views.

For a hike with a named mountain hut as its destination, another option is the ascent to Bettelwurfhütte. The hike from Absam-Eichat through Halltal takes about 4.5 hours. This is an estimated time; conditions may affect how long the hike takes. Check the latest trail and access information before setting out so you can plan according to local conditions.

Matschgerer and museums

The Matschgerer Museum was established between 1985 and 1987 by the Absam Matschgerer at Stainerstraße 1. It is housed in the former fire station of the municipality of Absam and displays around 200 wooden masks. The oldest is about 200 years old. The carved masks bring the craftsmanship behind the Matschgerer tradition to life; the approximate number of masks and the age of the oldest one give the collection a concrete context.

Performances are also part of the annual cultural calendar: During the carnival season, the Absam Matschgerer perform in local inns in the years between the major parades. These major parades take place every four years; individual performances may vary from season to season. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance, check the dates for the relevant carnival season.

Further cultural attractions include the Basilica of Our Lady and the Absam Municipal Museum. The Fieger Cross in the basilica is a crucifix carved from Swiss pine in the second half of the 15th century. The municipal museum displays an exceptional model of the Absam salt mine from the 19th century and a violin made by Jakob Stainer. Religious art, music history and the history of the salt mine thus offer distinct areas of interest.

Planning your hikes

The routes in Absam offer different highlights: the Runstboden loop includes the ski jump in the forest and the views from Runstboden, while the estimated 4.5-hour ascent to Bettelwurfhütte is an important planning consideration. The brine trail, meanwhile, stands out for its limestone walls, streams and views into a main tunnel. These differences can help you choose a route based on your preferred destination and available time, without applying the stated times to other trails.

At the entrance to Halltal in Absam, the newly redesigned car park offers around 200 spaces. The former toll road into Halltal is closed to public traffic. Keep both details in mind when planning and check local notices before driving or setting out on a hike.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Absam, you can choose your destination based on your interests: Halltal and its trails on the one hand, or the Matschgerer tradition and museums on the other. This can help you decide which themes you’d like to shape your stay.
