Riegersburg stands atop a 482-metre-high volcanic rock and is over 850 years old. Here, a striking geological formation meets a long castle tradition. The range of experiences also extends from exhibitions and hiking trails to climbing and other activities. If you want to discover Southeast Styria through a distinctive landmark, you’ll find a variety of ways to explore its history and enjoy outdoor activities here.
Riegersburg: volcanic rock, castle and activities
Riegersburg can be reached on foot, by funicular or via the via ferrata routes. The Hochschloss Kronegg at Riegersburg houses three exhibitions: the Witch Museum, the Castle Museum and the Weapons Museum. Check current exhibition availability before your visit. The Museum in the Old Armoury also offers guided tours by prior arrangement.
The Leopold via ferrata is built into the castle’s volcanic rock. Riegersburg is also the starting point for a climbing experience on 10,000 square metres of natural rock. The high ropes course at the foot of the castle reaches a height of 10 metres; there is also a 3D archery course at Riegersburg. On hot summer days, Riegersburg lido offers a chance to cool off. As it operates seasonally, check opening times in advance.
Hiking with a variety of route options
The Genusswanderweg (Culinary Hiking Trail) in Riegersburg starts in the town centre and follows an eastern and a western loop. Its Zotter Loop passes the Zotter Chocolate Experience and has been awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal. The Obstgartentour-FB7 is a pleasant, moderate circular route around Riegersburg. For choosing a route, the trail layouts make for an easy comparison: eastern and western loops on the Genusswanderweg, and a circuit around the castle on the FB7.
Culinary experiences with a range of highlights
Zotter offers a choice of different experiences: the Zotter Chocolate Indulgence Tour includes over 40 creatively designed tasting stations and 300 samples. The Cocoa Safari explores the theme of Tanzania and Uganda.
Zotter’s Edible Animal Garden is an open-air experience featuring animals, an adventure playground and a petting zoo. As it operates seasonally, check opening times in advance.
