Deutsch Haseldorf combines hiking routes with wine and border history. The 5.3 km circular trail starts at the car park opposite Weinlandhof; the “Path of Friendship” leads to Slovenia and then back to Austria. A traditional wine tavern, along with art and memorial sites, adds to this perspective. Choosing where to go is therefore about more than a single route: it also involves places to stop for refreshments and a variety of cultural themes.

Hiking and Regional Routes

The “Around Deutsch Haseldorf” circular trail is 5.3 km long and starts at the car park opposite Weinlandhof. Its length and starting point provide two specific reference points for planning. As route information can change, check it before setting out.

The second section of the Klöcher Traminer Trail runs from the wine shop to the Deutsch Haseldorf viewing tower, via Hochwarth and the ruins of Klöch Castle, and back to the starting point. The sequence of named places provides the route’s landmarks. The two trails therefore offer different planning reference points: one is a loop with a specific distance, while the other can be followed through its listed stops. The “Klapotetz Deutsch Haseldorf” is stop 7 on the Traminer Trail.

The cross-border “Path of Friendship” leads to Slovenia and then back to Austria. It was jointly created by the market town of Klöch and the Slovenian municipality of Cankova. The route links two countries, and its origins lie in cooperation between the two municipalities. This trail therefore brings together a cross-border route and a shared municipal history.

The Klöch Wine Road also passes through Deutsch Haseldorf, between Hochwarth and Pichla. It adds another named route to the hiking trails. Conditions along the Wine Road can change; check them before setting out.

Wine and Places to Stop

The traditional wine tavern at the Frühwirth winery in Deutsch Haseldorf serves Brettljause, Kübelfleisch and raw ham from the Styrian Vulkanland region. This gives the village’s connection to wine a culinary side too: the dishes listed make stopping for a meal an opportunity to enjoy regional products. The menu and opening arrangements may change; check them before planning a visit.

Art and Border History

In the Park of Thoughts near the border crossing at Deutsch Haseldorf stands a monument in the form of an 8.50-metre-high square pillar with 23,000 coloured studs. It is intended to commemorate the 23,000 people who died during the construction of the Ostwall at the end of the Second World War. The monument’s striking form and historical purpose give it a specific connection to the history of the place.

The metal sculpture “Openness to the World” stands at a connecting crossroads in Deutsch Haseldorf. Grapes extending from the globe are intended to symbolise that Klöcher wine is exported to many countries around the world. Alongside the memorial, the sculpture addresses a different theme: the significance of wine beyond the local area. The motifs offer contrasting perspectives—historical remembrance and a symbolic depiction of wine exports.
