A rocky promontory, sweeping views and archaeological traces shape Deutschlandsberg Castle. It is considered the town’s landmark and rises from a naturally well-protected location. The castle houses the Archeo Norico castle museum, which presents eight exhibitions. A treasure hunt takes visitors through the museum and explores the themes of the Celts, Romans and the Middle Ages. In this way, the treasure hunt follows these three themes and offers an introduction to different historical periods.
The Old Town walk also focuses on history, this time around the elongated main square. It identifies and describes 50 historic sites. Walk Through the Gorge and Vineyards
West of Deutschlandsberg lies the Deutschlandsberg Gorge, a rocky valley through which the LaĂźnitz flows. A footpath passes an uninhabited hermitage and continues uphill to the castle. The gorge is home to ecologically significant plant communities as well as numerous species of herbs, ferns and mosses. The gorge is freely accessible every day; sturdy footwear is recommended, and visitors enter at their own risk. Check the conditions before your visit.
The Deutschlandsberg Wine Trail offers a different focus. This 3.5-kilometre hike starts at the main square, leads through vineyards to the castle, and combines information about winegrowing with a wine tasting. You can choose between a route through a rocky valley along the LaĂźnitz and a hike centred on vineyards and wine knowledge.
Schilcher, Landscapes and Regional Routes
Deutschlandsberg lies in the heart of western Styria, surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests. Known as the Schilcher capital, the town is associated with Schilcher, a wine made from the Blauer Wildbacher grape, which thrives particularly well here. The Schilcher Wine Road passes through Wildbach and vineyards on its way to the Schilcher town of Deutschlandsberg. It is about 40 kilometres long and runs through the districts of Voitsberg and Deutschlandsberg.
The two wine routes differ considerably in scale: the Wine Trail is a 3.5-kilometre hike starting at the main square and ending at the castle; the Schilcher Wine Road is about 40 kilometres long and crosses two districts. The first focuses on a manageable hiking route, winegrowing knowledge and a tasting. The second offers a broader view of the wine-growing landscape of western Styria.
Culture and Experiences with Different Focal Points
The history of Frauenthal Castle dates back to the mid-16th century. The Schloss Frauenthal Golf Club has an 18-hole golf course in the Schilcherland region of Deutschlandsberg. Holes 1 to 11 are in the castle park, while holes 12 to 18 extend into the hilly countryside of western Styria. The landscapes described therefore shift from parkland to hills within the course. Wildbach Castle offers another historical connection: its history dates back to the 13th century, and its façades and interiors feature rich Baroque and Rococo decoration. The castle is not open to the public. It is therefore a historical point of interest, but its interiors should not be planned as a visitor attraction.
The theaterzentrum deutschlandsberg was founded in 1981 by various local theatre groups and became the cultural association “theaterzentrum deutschlandsberg” in 1986. Its priorities include progressive theatre that is interesting in form and content, involving specialists in acting, directing, set design and technical work, and ongoing youth programmes. The association’s history and artistic focus add a cultural dimension to a visit alongside the castle, Old Town and countryside.
The Bad Gams Kneipp facility in the middle of the forest offers a different kind of experience. Visitors can walk in the cold water and bathe their arms there; two hiking trails pass directly by the facility. This combines a specific water-based treatment with a forest setting and trails that pass the Kneipp facility.
