Bad Gams offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: you can explore trails with distinctive destinations, visit viewpoints, or learn about local history and regional produce. The activities focus on different things, so you can choose whether you would rather spend time outdoors, experience culture, or plan a guided tour with a tasting.
Trails and views with different destinations
The Bad Gams Energy Walk leads from the town centre along the Gamsbach stream to a quarry and is suitable for pushchairs. The Bad Gams Rosenkogel Trail No. 22 also follows the Gamsbach; its destinations are the Mendlalm alpine pasture and the summit cross on the Rosenkogel. Both trails take in the stream, but differ in their named destinations. When choosing between them, you can consider whether a walk to the quarry or a trail to the alpine pasture and summit cross better suits your plans.
The Wolfgangi Trail, Ă–AV Route 12, combines a trail with scenic views: it passes the Wolfgangi Church at 725 m and offers views of the Sulm and LaĂźnitz valleys. The Weinbergwarte in Bad Gams offers a different perspective, with views stretching from the Koralpe to the Slovenian border and across the Graz Basin. There are several named viewpoints and destinations to choose from, without needing to combine the trails into one route.
Local history and ceramics
The parish church of Bad Gams is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew and is a listed building. It was first mentioned in a document in 1382. This date marks its first documentary mention, making the church a specific point of interest if you are interested in the history of the town.
The mill museum in Bad Gams explores the history of milling. On display are hundreds of mills and centuries-old objects. It is best to check the current visiting arrangements before your museum visit. Ceramics are also part of local history: ceramics have been made in Bad Gams for over 100 years. Together, the church, mill museum and ceramics offer different cultural themes, from a protected building and historic mills to a continuing craft tradition.
Water and time outdoors
The GamsBad leisure and events centre covers 4.3 ha and includes a natural swimming lake and spacious sunbathing lawns. This focus on water and places to relax differs clearly from the trails, whose highlights include a quarry, an alpine pasture, a summit cross or scenic views. When choosing an outing, you can first decide whether you would like to cover a route or spend time at the natural swimming lake and on the sunbathing lawns.
Pumpkin seed oil, vinegar and Schilcher
The guided tour at Farmer-Rabensteiner’s Farm Oil Press includes a welcome drink and a tasting of Styrian pumpkin seed oil and pumpkin seeds in more than 40 flavours. Farmer-Rabensteiner’s Vinegar Cellar also offers a guided tour, with expert explanations and a tasting of more than 80 types of vinegar. The two experiences focus on different things: pumpkin seed oil and pumpkin seeds in one, vinegar in the other. If you are planning one of these tours, check the latest visitor information in advance.
Regional produce also features along the trails. The Bad Gams Pumpkin Circular Walk has information boards about pumpkins and pumpkin seed oil, a farm oil mill and an herb garden. The Bad Gams Schilcher Cellar Trail, meanwhile, offers the chance to explore regional wine cellars and taste Schilcher. The Bad Gams Schilcher Cellar offers Schilcher from 20 winegrowers in the region. You can choose between a trail with information about pumpkins and oil, exploring regional wine cellars, or visiting the Schilcher Cellar. The Weinbergwarte offers further views, stretching from the Koralpe to the Slovenian border and across the Graz Basin.
