Unken can be explored through a range of themes: regional herbal knowledge, trails with their own focus, historical culture and nature in Heutal. When planning, it is worth choosing activities based on your interests: a guided tour or seminar, explanations of regional fences, or views of the Saalach and the waterfall. This gives you a choice of different ways to explore, without turning them into a single route.

Herbal knowledge in different formats

At Steinpass in Unken, in the Salzburg region, the TEH Academy is headquartered at the TEH® naturwerke in the old customs house. It makes regional herbal knowledge accessible through herbal training courses, seminars and workshops. The programme ranges from learning in a course format to trails focused on herbs. Individual courses and dates may change; check the current programme in advance if you are planning to attend.

The herb garden at Lutzbauer offers guided tours and includes a 1.5 km medicinal herb trail that leads to Heutal. The Unken Fence Trail has a different focus: along the approximately 1 km route, you can see various fences and small gates from the Unken region; explanations and information boards complement the trail. The two offerings therefore differ both in subject and in the stated route length.

Heutal and trails with different focuses

The car park in Heutal is right by the lifts, hiking trails, bike routes and ascent routes for ski tourers. From the hiking car park in Heutal, you can also visit the Staubfall natural monument, with its thundering waterfalls plunging 200 metres. The car park is therefore a useful point of reference for visitors interested in the activities mentioned there or in the natural monument.

The village circular trail also offers a particular perspective on the surroundings: on the return leg, it follows the Saalach and offers a view of the chapel on Kalvarienberg. The Fence Trail, by contrast, focuses on regional fences and small gates, along with explanations of them. This distinction can help you choose: one trail links the village surroundings with the Saalach and the chapel, while the other is devoted to a regional form of design.

Cultural sites and regional history

Kalchofengut in Unken is a Mitterpinzgau farmhouse dating from the 13th century. For small groups, typical dishes such as Muas or Kasnocken are cooked over an open fire there by prior arrangement. Visitors interested in historic architecture and regional cuisine will find both in the same place; the cooking demonstration requires advance booking.

The Unken model railway is described as the largest exhibition layout in the Pinzgau region of Austria. Another cultural destination is Unken parish church, dedicated to Saint James the Greater and popular with pilgrims. The Way of St. James follows the Saalach and passes through Unken. These places offer different points of interest: an exhibition layout, a church associated with pilgrims, and a historic farmhouse where a cooking demonstration can be arranged in advance.

Getting there by regional bus

Regional bus 260 takes you directly to Unken, without changing buses, from the city of Salzburg and Bad Reichenhall, as well as from the direction of Zell am See and Saalfelden. If you plan to use the bus for your trip, check the current timetable before departure. You can then plan your visit according to your interests, choosing between herbal knowledge, themed trails, cultural sites and the natural monument in Heutal.
