Högmoos offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: an easy circular hike with an approximate walking time, routes with named waypoints, cycling and a historical connection dating back to the Bronze Age. There are also fishing opportunities at the Högmoos reservoir and an annual May festival. These details can help you decide whether you want your visit to focus more on a hike, a river route, a seasonal celebration or local history.

Hiking: circular routes and route details

The Högmoos–Hasenbach circular route is an easy loop with a walking time of around 1.5 hours; it starts and ends in Högmoos. From the small minimarket, it leads uphill through a charming old lane to Kleinsonnberg, branches off towards Hasenbach and returns to the starting point along a narrow path. The route goes from the village section up the hill and back along the narrow path. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Wiesfleck circular route starts in the Högmoos district, follows the Salzach to Gries, climbs to Pension Wiesfleck and returns to Högmoos via Thannberg. The two routes offer different points to consider when planning: the Hasenbach loop is described as easy and has an approximate walking time, while the Wiesfleck loop can be followed by its riverside section, climb and named places. You can compare one loop by time and difficulty, or get a sense of the other from its route details.

Cycle routes, the Salzach and fishing

Stage 3 of the Tauern Cycle Path reaches the Högmoos dam and then switches to the north side of the Salzach. Another route description is Stage 08 of the Pinzgau Marienweg: at the dam, a detour to the hamlet of Högmoos on the left bank of the Salzach is planned. The difference lies in the route: the Tauern Cycle Path reaches the dam and then changes sides, while the Marienweg includes a detour to the hamlet on the left bank. If you plan to follow either stage, use the relevant route description for guidance.

Guests can fish at the Högmoos reservoir. Before your trip, check which permits apply, as well as the season and rules. Fishing is therefore a separate planning consideration alongside the hiking and cycling routes.

Bronze Age and May festival

Bronze Age pottery has been found in Högmoos, and the area is also documented as a Bronze Age settlement site. The find refers to a specific object, while the settlement site describes the area's historical character. For those interested in culture, this early history adds a local dimension reaching far into the past to today's hiking and cycling options.

The annual calendar also offers a local occasion: a maypole is raised and the May festival is celebrated in Högmoos every year. If you would like to include the celebration in your stay, check the event dates before your trip. This seasonal occasion differs from the routes described, which can be selected by their paths and waypoints.
