Maishofen combines art history connected with Anton Faistauer with a variety of ways to explore the area on foot or by bike. The options are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: the cultural highlights include dated frescoes, an altar, a presentation of original works and a themed trail with ten stops. For cycling, there is access to the Tauern Cycle Path, flat routes in the village and a dedicated adventure-golf route. Seasonal hikes and an alpine festival in August round out the offerings.
Art and Faistauer’s Legacy
Stablberg Chapel was built in 1897 and received its first frescoes by Anton Faistauer in June 1909. Another notable work is Anton Faistauer’s Great Salzburg Votive Altar, on permanent loan from the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and on display in Maishofen’s parish church. The Anton Faistauer Window in the community centre, which opened in 2024, presents a selection of the artist’s original works.
These examples offer different ways to explore Faistauer’s work: the chapel is linked to a history of construction and frescoes, while the altar and window present specific works and a selection of original works, respectively. This makes it possible to distinguish between an individual work, a presentation of works and a historic site when planning a cultural visit.
The Anton Faistauer Hiking Trail takes a different approach. Its ten stops illustrate the artist’s connection to Maishofen. Those looking for more than individual works and wishing to follow a themed trail will find an option here that explores this connection at several stops.
Cycling and Adventure Golf
Maishofen is connected to the 280 km Tauern Cycle Path. There are also low-traffic, flat cycle paths in the village and through green meadows to Lake Zell.
Rad- & Wandergolf Maishofen features ten adventure-golf stations along a route about 10 km long. It can be completed by bike or on foot. Unlike the cycle paths leading to Lake Zell, the adventure-golf stations are part of the route concept here.
Hiking and Seasonal Events
From June to September, guided hikes are organised weekly in Maishofen. The golden Maishofen hiking badge can be earned by visiting a total of 20 hiking points.
The Maishofen Alpine Festival takes place in August at Kammereggalm. Guided hikes run from June to September, while the alpine festival is held in August. If you are planning your travel dates around one of these events, please check the specific date of the hike or festival.
Panoramas and Landscape
From a summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Pinzgau Grass Mountains, the Leogang Steinberge, the Steinernes Meer, the Hochkönig, the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern and Lake Zell. The mountain ranges, Hochkönig, glaciers and lake create a sweeping landscape panorama, adding another dimension to the cultural and cycling highlights.
