Großsonnberg offers several specific ways to enjoy a stay: visiting a mountain farm, exploring Kitzloch Gorge and hiking routes of varying difficulty. Other highlights include insights into the agricultural history of the Taxenbach sunny slopes and the Pinzgau-Ost Shuttle, which has a stop in Großsonnberg.

Farm Life and the History of the Landscape

At Untermoos Farm, Großsonnberg 4, visitors are invited to discover life on a farm, visit the animals in the barn and experience the everyday life of a mountain farmer in the Pinzgau. Anyone interested in rural ways of working and living can make a visit to the farm a focus of their stay. It complements the hikes with a glimpse into everyday farming life.

Großsonnberg is one of five mountains on the sunny side of Taxenbach. Grain was grown on this sunny side, which also includes Großsonnberg, until the 1960s. Agricultural use is therefore part of the history of this landscape. The history of grain cultivation adds a historical perspective to today's exploration of hiking trails and mountain tours.

Hiking: Gorge, Alpine Pasture and Circular Route

Nearby Kitzloch Gorge was formed over many thousands of years by rainwater and meltwater and lies on the edge of Hohe Tauern National Park. Walkways and tunnels dating from the 16th century give hikers and walkers access to the gorge. The hike through Kitzloch Gorge is about 1.7 kilometres long and takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Seasonal conditions can affect access, so check whether it is accessible before your visit.

The circular hike to Adamhütte and Moosalm starts in Großsonnberg. It is rated moderate and requires good fitness and sure-footedness; most of the trails are accessible. Check the tour information again before setting out. Unlike the Kitzloch Gorge route, for which a distance and approximate duration are given, this circular route places greater emphasis on the physical demands.

The mountain tour “Pfarrachhöhe from Gries” leads from Gries via Griesergraben and Parzenbichlalm to Pfarrachalm and on to Pfarrachhöhe. Pfarrachalm is located on Großsonnberg. If you choose this route, you can follow its course via the individual stops; a hiking time or difficulty rating for this tour is not included here as part of the planning information.

Shuttle and Routes in the Region

The Pinzgau-Ost Shuttle serves the Großsonnberg Siedlung stop. It runs daily from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., including Sundays and public holidays. There is an exception for Rauris: the shuttle runs there only on weekends, not Monday to Friday. Rides can be booked via the Salzburg-Verkehr Shuttle app. Check the timetable and booking information before travelling.

The church connection also points to St. Georgen im Pinzgau: a larger part of the population on Großsonnberg is affiliated with the parish there. The walk takes about half an hour. If you plan to walk this route, check the conditions locally.
