Wald Im Pinzgau offers several different themes to choose from when planning your trip: a Way of Contemplation with stations, religious sites, a seasonal Nativity Scene Trail and hikes with clearly named destinations. This variety offers different ways to shape your stay: sometimes a religious or cultural theme defines the route, sometimes a scenic destination or the question of where a tour begins and how the return journey is organised. The Nativity Scene Trail is also seasonal; for some hikes, the starting point and return journey deserve particular attention.
Churches, themed trails and minerals
The Way of Contemplation leads from the parish church in Wald to Schlaßberg/Vorderkrimml. A total of eleven stations with symbolic signs and sayings give it a thematic route. Those who choose a trail not only for its destination but also for its content will find a clear focus here.
The parish church in Wald is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and the Fourteen Holy Helpers; it is also the starting point of the Way of Contemplation. The Augentrost Chapel was built in 1768. Alongside the church’s dedication, this adds a specific historical reference.
The Mineralien-Museum and Nowak shop focus on displaying complete mineral associations, known as parageneses. The emphasis is therefore on minerals in their assembled form. If you are interested in these relationships, you can take this focus into account when choosing your excursions.
The Nativity Scene Trail and its seasonal period
The Walder Nativity Scene Trail follows the Salzach and crosses meadow paths. The nativity scenes are set up from Christmas until 2 February, Candlemas. If the nativity scenes themselves are the reason for your trip, plan your visit during this period and confirm the exact dates in advance. The display period is key to choosing when to visit; the route along the river and across meadow paths separately describes the character of the trail.
Hikes with different destinations
The Markkirchl–Salzachgeier hike leads to the source of the Salzach, the main river of the federal state of Salzburg. Here, a specific scenic destination takes centre stage. By contrast, the Way of Contemplation follows its eleven stations. This difference can help you choose between a named river destination and a themed trail.
The Wieserwald Circular Trail starts at Wald im Pinzgau railway station and leads back to Wald. Both a specific starting point and the return to Wald are therefore indicated. Public buses can be used for the return journey on the hike from Wald to the Krimml Waterfalls. Check the timetable for your visit so that you can include the return journey in your day’s plans.
Practical facilities can also matter when planning: there is an e-bike charging station at Bäckerei Schroll in Wald. As facilities may change, confirm before your hike that the charging station will be available on your chosen date.
