Sankt Koloman combines moorland, Alpine pasture trails and cultural sites, offering a variety of ways to enjoy a stay. At Seewaldsee, nature and a circular trail take centre stage; on the Trattberg, activities range from Alpine pasture walks to scenic circular tours. There are also signposted trails, mountain bike routes and, in winter, cross-country skiing and ice stock sport. Museums and historic buildings add their own distinctive touches.

Seewaldsee and the Trattberg

Seewaldsee is a moor lake in the Seewaldsee Landscape Conservation Area. The protected area is located in Sankt Koloman and Scheffau and covers 143.7 hectares. Quiet forests and gentle moor meadows surround the lake; its flora and fauna are considered species-rich. A visit here therefore leads into a landscape where the moorland character and protected surroundings belong together.

The paid car park at Seewaldsee can be reached via the Trattberg panoramic road, between the centre of Sankt Koloman and the Wegscheid district; the drive takes about 15 minutes. Check access again before your visit. A well-maintained forest road runs along the right-hand side of the circular trail and is suitable for families with pushchairs and wheelchair users. This suitability applies to the section of trail mentioned.

The Trattberg has hiking trails for different types of outings, from leisurely walks across Alpine pastures to scenic circular tours over expansive ridges. The Trattberg panoramic road also leads to an Alpine pasture area with gentle pastures, rustic huts and wide-ranging views. The Trattberg is therefore ideal for both walks and longer tours.

Hiking trails and mountain bike tours

The Taugler dialect Stations of the Cross is a 3.4-kilometre scenic circular trail with five chapels. Another signposted hike leads through quiet forest landscapes to Wilhelmskapelle. The Leonhardsweg also passes through Sankt Koloman: it runs from Salzburg to Tamsweg and passes through the village along the way.

Two differently described mountain bike tours start in Sankt Koloman. One follows the paved Trattberg panoramic road, passing the EnzianhĂĽtte to the viewing platform and continuing to Hintertrattberg. Another runs via Tauglboden and an asphalt road to Grundbichlalm; from there, forest roads lead to the mountain pastures. A challenging 52-kilometre loop around the Osterhorn Group has 2,500 metres of elevation gain and passes by Seewaldsee. The first two tours have different destinations: Hintertrattberg on one, and Grundbichlalm followed by the mountain pastures on the other; the challenging loop goes around the Osterhorn Group and passes by Seewaldsee.

Chapels, natural monument and regional history

Wilhelmskapelle is situated at the foot of the Wilhelmswand and is described as one of Salzburg's oldest sacred buildings. The Salzburg heritage list dated 23 June 2026 includes it in Sankt Koloman as a monument protected by decree. A chapel at this site was already mentioned in 1684.

The Sankt Koloman local history museum offers insights into everyday life in the region through farm implements, school items, rocks and models. The Alte Branterer-MĂĽhle is a historic building and offers insights into old milling technology and the local economy. Another natural monument is the glacial polish, described as Europe's largest exposed glacial polish.

Seasonal activities and places to eat

The “Feuchter Keller” show cave can be visited on guided tours on weekends between June and October. The tour lasts around two hours, includes some easy climbing and is suitable for children and adults. Check the tour conditions before your visit. In winter, Sankt Koloman has two well-maintained trails for classic cross-country skiing and skating. Check winter conditions and trail grooming before travelling. Two ice stock rinks can be hired for an afternoon or evening; check seasonal availability and make a reservation in advance.

For a break, Tauglerei in the village centre serves internationally inspired dishes with regional influences. Around Sankt Koloman, the Taugler Alpine pastures offer fresh dairy products, home-baked bread and homemade regional specialities. The Sankt Koloman hiking map includes routes, tour tips, elevation profiles and places to eat, complementing the range of hiking trails with practical guidance.
