A late Gothic net-vault, a stone table beneath an old lime tree and a trail past HellabrĂĽndl towards Wiestal give Oberalm a character shaped by its architectural and local history. Different interests can be combined when planning your trip: church architecture, rural building traditions, historical justice, a trail steeped in cultural history, and cultural and culinary offerings. You can explore Oberalm from different perspectives, depending on your interests.
Church, court site and rural building traditions
The parish church of St. Stephen has a late Gothic net-vault. Its ribs divide the vault in a net-like pattern. The church is also home to the hereditary burial place of the knightly Wiespeck family. The architecture and family history are thus directly linked in this building.
The Oberalm Thaiding Table is near the church: an original stone table with a roughly hewn marble slab beneath an old lime tree. Until the beginning of the 19th century, it served as a Schranne, a court or assembly site; from time immemorial, the customary law of the land was proclaimed and justice was administered there every year. The table’s tangible form and its historical function are at the heart of a distinct cultural-history topic.
In the centre of Oberalm is the FilzhofgĂĽtl, an old farmhouse in the typical style of a Tennengau single farmstead. In a single farmstead, the living and farm areas have traditionally been housed under one roof. The FilzhofgĂĽtl thus draws attention to rural architecture and complements the themes of church and justice with a different type of building.
Wayside shrine trail and activity
The Oberalm Wayside Shrine Trail leads from Oberalm past HellabrĂĽndl towards Wiestal. The trail passes various wayside crosses (Marterln) and small chapels, each of which tells its own story. If you are planning an outing with historical interest, these crosses and chapels are part of what makes the trail special.
Löwenstern Park offers opportunities for a workout. The two activities differ in their focus: the Wayside Shrine Trail centres on wayside crosses, chapels and their stories, while the park is a place to work out. When planning your day, you can choose between a trail steeped in cultural history and a sporting activity.
Cultural programme and culinary options
Kultur.Werkstatt Oberalm organises cultural events in the fields of music, theatre, literature and visual arts. The programme thus covers a range of cultural disciplines. If you would like to combine your stay with an event, check the current dates.
At the farmers’ market at the Winklhof location in Oberalm, the Karl farm dairy offers cheese, quark and yoghurt made in-house. This is a specific culinary option alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions.
