In the centre of Kuchl lies BĂĽrgerausee, a man-made bathing lake in the heart of the town. The 1.5-kilometre-long tree trail runs around it. It is a leisurely, pram-friendly walk for the whole family. Right next to the lake, on the Salzach, is the Kuchler Schwall surf wave, a hotspot for river surfers. A lakeside walk and river surfing on the Salzach thus represent two different sides of the town.
Water, cycling routes and destinations
The cycling routes described also lead to different destinations: From Kuchl, a well-signposted cycle path runs through the entire Tennengau region to the city of Salzburg. Another route crosses the Salzach in Kuchl and follows the Tauern Cycle Path towards Golling. Cyclists planning a tour can choose between two clearly identified destinations: Salzburg via the route through the Tennengau, or Golling on the Tauern Cycle Path.
Georgenberg and the landscape
Georgenberg is a so-called inselberg, with steeply rising rock faces. Leisurely hiking trails follow a paved road around and up the mountain; there are also paths through the forest. The routes described therefore differ in their layout: the road and the forest paths offer different ways to explore the mountain.
The branch church of St. George stands on Georgenberg. It is a listed building, constructed in the Late Gothic style. A northern bald ibis breeding station is also located on the mountain’s rock face. The birds can be observed there while they are being raised, so this opportunity to experience nature depends on the breeding season.
Nesslangeralm lies at the foot of Hoher Göll. Kühschwalb is a secluded natural spot with views of Hoher Göll’s sheer rock faces and forms the end of the valley beneath the eastern slopes of the Göll’s eastern face. Both descriptions highlight the striking mountain landscape, but with different emphases: the alpine pasture at the foot of the mountain and the natural spot at the head of the valley.
Local history and cheesemaking
The Kuchl Museum on Severinplatz is next to the parish church. It explores local history and traditions and displays unique exhibits. The museum focuses on the history of the town, while the “Make Your Own Cheese” workshop at the Fürstenhof organic farm dairy offers a hands-on experience.
During the workshop, participants make their own cheese, from milk to finished product. It includes a tasting and about 850 grams of cheese to take home. Participants also receive a certificate as a Salzburger Almsommer cheesemaker. For planning purposes, it is advisable to check the workshop’s reservation arrangements in advance.
Event and trip to Salzburg
The traditional Kuchl Bauernherbst fair takes place on the second Sunday in September. Exact event details may vary from year to year, so check the information for the year of your visit.
Salzburg can also be included in your travel plans: With the Guest Mobility Ticket, the city of Mozart is just 20 minutes from Kuchl by S-Bahn or bus, free of charge. Check the timetable and ticket conditions before travelling. When planning, you can weigh up Kuchl’s attractions—from the tree trail and Georgenberg to the museum, cheese workshop and cycling routes—and a trip to Salzburg.
