Zistersdorf lies amid vineyards at the foot of the Steinberg. At the same time, the town’s history can be traced through specific architectural and street features: the town was completely surrounded by a city wall, with a town gate on both the west and east sides. Notable historical landmarks include the only surviving former town gate, remains of the wall in Naglergasse and the Maria Moos pilgrimage church. The landscape and architectural history thus offer two distinct perspectives on the town.

City Walls and Former Town Gates

The northern gate is the only one of the former town gates that has survived; it was built around 1782. Remains of the city wall are still preserved along the full length of Naglergasse, overlooking the former town moat, which is now called Stadtgrabengasse. The history of the fortifications is therefore visible in several forms: the surviving gate, the remains of the wall and the street name, which recalls the former moat. Visitors interested in historic town layouts can view these as different traces: the gate represents a surviving structure, while the wall remains mark the course of the former fortifications. The gate’s approximate date and the present-day name Stadtgrabengasse add temporal and spatial context to this picture of the town.

Maria Moos as a Historic Landmark

The Maria Moos pilgrimage church was built by the Kuenringers in 1160. Alongside the history of the fortifications, it provides a religious landmark whose construction date is considerably earlier than the northern gate’s approximate date of around 1782. The two historical features can thus be read as different layers in time: the church dates to 1160, while the surviving gate was built around 1782. This comparison makes the town’s history more tangible than a simple list of names and shows that Zistersdorf offers more than one historic landmark.

Vineyard Setting, Moospark and Forest Nature Trail

The vineyards at the foot of the Steinberg shape Zistersdorf’s landscape setting. Another place to enjoy the outdoors is Moospark, also known as Ledererpark. It was created around the adjacent Moosteich pond as a recreation and fun park for all ages. If you are looking for the park, it is worth knowing both names: Moospark and Ledererpark refer to the same place, while Moosteich is the named landmark in the surrounding park area. The vineyards and Steinberg thus define the landscape setting, while Moospark is an area specifically created as a recreation and fun park.

The forest nature trail is on the outskirts of Zistersdorf, in the direction of Gaiselberg. To find your way, use the intersection of UmfahrungsstraĂźe and GaiselbergerstraĂźe by Schlossteich pond, where signposts point out the route. This provides both a general direction and a specific intersection as reference points. The forest nature trail and Moospark offer different thematic experiences: one is described as a nature trail, the other as a recreation and fun park. When planning your visit, you can choose between them according to their respective character.

Wine Cellar Lanes in the Greater Municipality

Wine cellar lanes on the outskirts of, or outside, the settlements are characteristic of the townscape of the greater municipality of Zistersdorf. Alongside the vineyard setting on the Steinberg, they are another regional feature connecting wine with the local landscape. The wine cellar lanes are therefore a feature of the greater municipality, while the remains of the city wall, the gate and the pilgrimage church are specific historic landmarks in the town. This perspective extends from individual buildings to the townscape of the greater municipality without conflating these different spatial levels.
