Ebenthal combines proximity to the forest, wine country and trails with very different time commitments. The village lies on the edge of Matzner Forest and is surrounded by vineyards. It is also home to Coburg Castle, cultural venues and the cellar festival held every year on Corpus Christi. For planning, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on: a short walk, a longer hike, a cycling tour or a stay centred around the festival.
Forest, Wine and Trails
The edge of Matzner Forest and the vineyards give Ebenthal two distinct landscape features. If you enjoy forest and wine as travel themes, you will find both reflected in the village. The three hiking routes mainly follow forest and field paths; the White Trail runs through the “Altes Gebirge” area of Ebenthal Forest.
A Walk, Hike or Cycling Tour
The Busserlsteig is an easy walking trail, 1,900 m long, with a stated walking time of 30 minutes. The Neubergerweg is 8,700 m long, rated moderate, with a stated walking time of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The two trails therefore differ considerably in the time required and their difficulty ratings: the Busserlsteig is a short walk, while the Neubergerweg is a longer hike. Check the conditions on your chosen route before setting out.
For cycling, the approximately 62 km Traminer cycling route passes through Ebenthal. It is described as a moderate day tour for recreational cyclists and an easy two-day tour for leisure cyclists. This route therefore offers two different ways to divide up the time. The right plan depends on whether you intend to spend one day or two days on the cycling tour.
The Castle and Local Culture
Coburg Castle is a two-storey building dating largely from the first half of the 18th century and presenting itself as a unified creation of the late Baroque period. The castle chapel is located in the southwest corner. Its frescoes depict the Holy Trinity and the Instruments of the Passion. For culture enthusiasts, the castle brings together an overall late Baroque design and specific religious imagery. The parish church also features a named subject: Saint Coloman, the church’s patron saint, is depicted in the high altar painting.
The Schüttkasten was converted into an event venue and incorporated into the primary school’s gymnasium. The top floor houses the municipal library and rooms for a range of cultural activities. Together with the castle and parish church, the Schüttkasten showcases other facets of Ebenthal’s local culture, from an event venue to spaces for reading and various cultural activities.
The Cellar Festival and Travel Planning
The cellar festival has been held in Ebenthal every year on Corpus Christi since 2000. Visitors can sample a range of white and red wines in numerous cellars that open for the occasion. Corpus Christi is therefore the date to keep in mind if you are planning your trip around the festival. If this is your focus, plan your stay around the festival date.
