In Orth an der Donau, cultural history and river landscapes come together as themes for a stay. Orth Castle, museumORTH, the Schlossinsel and the Danube offer different points of interest – from a historic building to a guided activity in the floodplains.

Orth Castle and local history

Orth Castle houses the visitor centre of the Danube-Auen National Park and the museum of the market town of Orth an der Donau. A wooden staircase dating from the 14th century is also located in the castle. For a long time, Orth Castle was an largely overlooked architectural gem of the Renaissance. The national park exhibition “In the Flow” explains how the river floodplain landscape formed and the ecological processes that continue to shape it today.

Culture in Orth

museumORTH has dedicated a room installation to actress Anni Rosar, whose roots lay in Orth. A memorial to Karl Schiske, the internationally acclaimed composer from Orth, has been set up in the southwest tower of museumORTH. The parish church of Orth an der Donau is dedicated to St Michael. Theatre, music and the church’s dedication thus complement the themes of the castle and floodplains with links to local history.

Floodplain landscape and trails

On a walk around the Auen-Erlebnis Schlossinsel, visitors can discover characteristic habitats, animals and plants of the river landscape. European pond turtles, several native snake species, amphibians and European ground squirrels can be seen there. While “In the Flow” explains how the floodplain landscape formed and its ecological processes, the Schlossinsel focuses on habitats and the animal groups on display.

In the floodplains around Orth, two side channels have been reconnected to the Danube. A hiking route in Orth an der Donau runs partly along the free-flowing Danube; check trail conditions before setting out. The hiking route and the walk around the Schlossinsel have different focuses: the former follows the river, while the latter features habitats, animals and plants along the way.

Tschaike, cycle route and getting there

The Danube-Auen National Park’s combined offer includes a cruise on the Danube aboard the Tschaike, followed by a guided walk in the floodplain forest. The departure point is the Tschaike/Danube harbour landing in Orth an der Donau. For 2026, the offer runs from 1 April to 30 October; check availability for later seasons.

The Tschaike operated by the Orth/Donau shipping company is a 20-metre replica of a Danube vessel from 1530 and can be rowed on request. The combined experience includes both the cruise and the guided walk that follows; the Schlossinsel walk, by contrast, is a separate way to explore habitats and animal groups.

Orth an der Donau lies directly on the Passau–Vienna–Budapest Danube Cycle Path. Orth Castle can be reached by VOR regional bus routes 550, 552, 553 and 545. Check bus connections before travelling. For travel planning, note that the details refer to different places: the Danube Cycle Path runs through the town, while the bus routes serve Orth Castle.

Find accommodation to suit your stay

When looking for a hotel in Orth an der Donau, start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: the castle and local history, the floodplain landscape, the combined Tschaike cruise and walk, or a stage of the Danube Cycle Path. The season dates matter for the national park offer; if travelling by bus, check connections before departure. This way, the reason for your stay takes centre stage, rather than planning accommodation separately from your intended itinerary.
